Jazz piano, good! Boogie Woogie piano, bad! Same with stride piano. All technique, no musical heart.

I became a dedicated (more or less) jazz piano player when i was about 11 years old. After i heard Monk the first time, nothing else mattered.

Stick with the jazz piano. The freedom of expression is worth it.
