Mourners Listen To Funeral Through Car Stereos At Drive-In Church

Gerald Kooi's friends gathered at the Woodland Drive-In Church on Friday to pay their last respects to the man they same way they had worshipped alongside him: in their cars.

And just like on Sundays, most of the 100 or so cars that pulled in for the Grand Rapids Township man's funeral were tuned in to 105.1 FM for the service, either on their car radios or radios borrowed from the church. Some mourners listened from their cars, while others set out folding chairs in the parking lot.

Kooi, a longtime member of the drive-in church at 2600 Breton Road SE, died Monday. He was 63.
