I'm looking for a DSL or cable modem server...
preferably one that is not owned by mega-pigs.

My dial-up server has started offering DSL for about $50 a month. Is this reasonable? I like the company, Redjellyfish, because part of the monthly service charge helps fund environmental charities.

I'd also be happy to find a company which supports the liberal agenda.

Please share your thoughts and experiences... :-)

5. DSLReports is a good place to research. Check Cyberonic
I have had cyberonic for since drecktv got out of the dsl biz and it has been great.

Big pluses:

1. Fastest backbone, very dependable - Worldcom uunet.

2. 1500 down 768 up for real if you are within about 1.5 miles of CO.

3. Dedicated ip address. No PPOE or other crap, just dhcp or manual ip.

4. Good tech support 1-800 number.

$50.00/Month $100.00 setup fee.

I have no interest in cyberonic other than being a satisfied customer.

2. If you're on Time-Warner cable
Roadrunner runs around $42 a month, on top of your cable bill. It's worth it to me, since I don't watch television but someone else in the house does. I average 250k/s upstream and 1200-1500k/s downstream. And I've only had twice in the past two years when it went out. Once was over a fallen tree, and recently we got an electrostatic charge from a storm. They replaced the cable modem, after I found out what the problem was, and I got a surge protector with hook-ups for the cable line.

3. I'm with WideOpenWest
Don't know if they're in your area, but I'm happy with the service. I pay about $105/mo for every cable TV channel they offer and their highest level of cable modem access (about 2000bps). Their customer service is incredible, too...3 rings and you're talking to an actual person.

4. 50 bucks is the going rate...
for DSL, although some phone companies, like Verizon, dropped the price, and other outfits dropped a little. If you like these people, go with their DSL offer and hope the price comes down a little in the future. Not having to change email addies and newsservers is a bonus.

Cablemodems are usually faster, unless you get to the point where there are enough people on your block to suck up the bandwidth and slow things down. Cable service is usually a little more expensive, and the extra speed usually only means something with huge downloads. Most of the slowdowns in websurfing are server delays and your own computer trying to figure out complicted pages. Download speed rarely affects these.

Unless you get stuck with huge downtimes, rotten servers, or other problems, any braodband is usually better in a hundred ways than dialup if you spen a lot of time online.

fwiw, I have Verizon DSL, which normally dl's at a little under 700k, and has had few technical problems. I kept my Mindspring/Earthlink account as a backup, and use their mail servers. I can access my Mindspring email through the dsl, so kept my old email addies.
