Damn, I am glad I left Schenectady
Talk about the Jobless Armpit of the World, where selling herion is one of the valid career choices at the school's job placement center. It makes Seattle look like Cloud Nine with a Starbucks. :P

1. I used to do business at GE there in Schenectady
it is very depressing. I used to drive from there to Utica, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo. The countryside is beautiful, but the cities are depressing.

3. I visited
that GE plant once to observe a portion of their production line. Big place.

5. My grandfather worked there
He used to love to take me back to the plant to see the big turbines and stuff. I was very young and didn't really know what anything was.

Schenectady was the GE plant. The town lived and died with that plant. I think it's doing better now - they have some medical companies moving in and creating some jobs. A lot of the GE plant has been demolished from what I understand.

9. Is the big GE sign gone?
They used to light it up with red and green bulbs at Christmas... I always looked forward to it when I was little. (OK, how sad it THAT? There are no other attractions in the city).

14. I hope not.
That is the only attraction in the city, not counting Pinhead Susan's bar. :D

16. YES!
The Schenectady 2000 campaign finally got the graffiti removed (even after several attempts to replace it), and someone opened a bar in its honor:

22. Many Schenectadians can spell it.
But that doesn't stop them from likewise pretending it doesn't exist. :D

13. cool
I was in the class of 75, probably way before your cousins. Nice to meet you. I haven't been back there in forever but I do miss the easy acess to the Adirondacks and the incredible fall color.
We get color here in Pa, but nothing like I remember in Schenectady county.

My parents live in Saratoga Co. now and it's a nice change to go up there... very Republican neighbors though. :scared:

Now there's a depressing place. We spent the night there on our way out East several years ago.

20. I'm learning my lesson
All suffering comes from desire. My desire to watch hockey is causing my suffering.

I've learned that my desire to watch hockey must be very great. :(

Actually, I'm spending a lot of time in the wood shop right now, making sawdust. It's not the same without hockey on the radio, but I'm getting projects done.

23. I was hoping that kept you occupied
Perhaps you will have enough spare time and energy to build yet another garage? Maybe a new room? Another house?

And much meditation time in the ZenLeftyGarden.

24. I'll admit to visiting Schenectady almost every summer since '97
Including this year. I have relatives who live in Sciotia. I stay with them or nearby during the Saratoga meet in late July and August, a half hour drive from Sciotia.

My uncle worked at the GE plant fresh out of college so I visited the first year. Otherwise, I think I found one decent little museum with a planetarium and not much else.

But the weather is a great summer escape from the 110 of Las Vegas and plenty of reasonably priced golf. I always find a few interesting things in that area. This year I visited the FDR home and museum, and also Eleanor's residence where she lived after FDR died.
