Based on the number of Cat Stevens threads
DU comes from the school of 'no--that horse is not yet dead.'

3. Funny you should mention this.

The pull of the Cat Steven's threads seem to lessen with each beer I consume. Curious...

On edit: However, I'm strangely drawn to the threads about the Cat Steven's threads...

4. Yeah, the demonization of Muslims to justify a "holy" war against Islam
is hardly a suitable topic of conversation.

11. I think it was probably stupid..
..but I still don't like him for defending the fatwa against Rushdie.

12. That has been debunked repeatedly.
He did not defend the fatwa, he was against it. He explained it theoretically once, but denounced it, and the theoretical explaination is the only video shown, out of context.

6. You got in a great dig about Rushdie wishing

he'd set his "Verses" to sappy, happy tunes. :7

I'm not anti-Islam and I liked Cat Stevens in his heyday (sappy, happy tunes though they were!) but don't get why people are defending him so vigorously and vociferously.

7. Salman doesn't deserve to be killed, Yusef shouldn't be barred from the US
Hell, we have Jimmy Swaggart in here, after all.

9. Cat Stevens is catching more flak on DU
than Ann Coulter ever did
and she wants us all dead.

Even that John Derbyshire who advocated for the killing of chelsea Clinton
was not raked over the coals as hard.
http://www.nationalreview.com/derbyshire/derbyshire021501.shtml

I just don't understand it.
I am not defending anyone.
I am just saying that I find it hard to comprehend the venom directed towards Cat
and the pathological need to defend Rushdie.
Especially since Rushdie appears to be an agent provocateur,
comparable to an Islamic version of Democrat Zell Miller.

10. No. shit... if we can lock out Cat Stevens for one statement then why not.
...boot out Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson for this little spew of hatred...

Falwell: "What we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact, God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."

Robertson: "Well, Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror, we haven't begun to see what they can do to the major population."

Falwell: "The ACLU has got to take a lot of blame for this. And I know I'll hear from them for this, but throwing God...successfully with the help of the federal court system...throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad...I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."

Robertson: "I totally concur, and the problem is we've adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government, and so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do, and the top people, of course, is the court system."

Falwell: "Pat, did you notice yesterday that the ACLU and all the Christ-haters, the People for the American Way, NOW, etc., were totally disregarded by the Democrats and the Republicans in both houses of Congress, as they went out on the steps and and called out to God in prayer and sang 'God bless America' and said, let the ACLU be hanged. In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time, calling on God."
