Can someone answer an odd military question for me?
I've been looking for the answer to this, but haven't found it yet so I thought I'd give DU a try. Roughly, how big is a battalion in the Special Forces? I read that battalions can be anywhere from 300-1,000 soldiers, but wouldn't it be different for Special Forces since there's a lot less of them?

I'm reading this article about how two SF soldiers died last Monday in Afghanistan in an ambush and it lists them as "2nd Battalion of the 3rd Special Forces Group." I know the teams are small, but are there a lot of teams in a battalion?

I obviously know very little about the structure, but I'm curious. Any info would be appreciated.

1. Okay, Gloria, I'm embarrassed.
I've always thought I could answer any military question posed here by non-military DU-ers. If not off the top of my head, then by consulting my large source of military reference books. Guess what?

 I'm not really sure. I was a tank crewman. Ask me about tanks. I really don't know much about the Special Forces, except if you want to piss them off, call them the "Green Beanies".

2. Not as big as regular battalions.
SPECIAL FORCES COMPANY, SPECIAL FORCES BATTALION
Organization
The Special Forces Company is comprised of a
Company Headquarters and six SFOD Operational
"A" Detachments.

Personnel
The Special Forces Company consists of 8 officers,
7 warrant officers, and 67 enlisted soldiers.

from:
http://globalspecops.com/sf2.html

each "A" team used to be 12-men strong, I don't know for sure if that is still true, but give or take you have...

154 or so in a SF Battalion

4. thank you so much!
From what I understand, the "A" team is the only one deployable so that's the number I'm looking for.

Thanks again!
