11. What you don't see in that clip
Is that the reporter was trying to take pictures of her son Sindri. This happening at the same Bjork was being stalked by a man who mailed bombs to her home and eventually killed himself on video. Oh, that reporter had been stalking her for four days. Bjork wasn't charged with any wrongdoing and the reporter chose not to sue her.

3. My son was there for six months, including on 9/11 ...
And, by the way, it's way UP there, not down there.

At the right time of the year, the Northern Lights are mind-blowing from what I heard.

There are only about 5 or 6 last names in Iceland. And the country is 100% Lutheran.

6. I have a couple friends from Iceland
One of them is, kid you not, named Thor.

He visited when I lived in Hawaii, and one day I had one of those gigantic hawaiian B52 cockroaches in my bathtub. I hated the damned things - well, let's be honest. Not hated. "Scared shitless of". I have no shame to admit that. So I said, "Thor, could you kill that cockroach, please?"

I loved being able to say that.

8. I have been to Iceland
Back in 1980 on a flight back from Europe. It was october and the temps were below zero. The aurora borealis was from horizon to horizon. We just had to wait in the terminal for an hour while they serviced the plane but I stayed outside as much as I could to see the sky, even freezing my @ss off. It was beautiful.

Loved it. Did not want to return to the US. The pictures she took were stunning.

I spent ten days in Iceland with my boy, after wanting to head that way for about a decade. It was absolutely magnificent, I can't recommend it enough. We drove up and down the east coast for a few days (cliffs and waterfalls and icelandic horses and REALLY good food), but spent most of it doing this absolutely unbelievable, and quite well known, seven day trek. We essentially walked from the center of the country down to the southern coast.

As hikes go, I think it's the best one I can imagine. Every two hours it was some dramatic new scenery that I had no idea even existed here on earth: volcanic ash making volcanic mountains multi-colored, steam rising from vents, the ground so hot it is thumping, an endless black sand and pumice desert, green green valleys, crystal clear lakes, rocky steep inclines, waterfalls (oh waterfalls!), glaciers hanging about on top of two peaks with a small pathway between them, hilarious little scraggly "trees" making up the "forest", that's littered with fat sweet mushrooms...up and down and up and down and up and down. It's really outrageous that that country even exists, it's like another planet. It was absolutely the best trek I've ever ever even begun to imagine.

I can't even recommend it highly enough...even though you have to do a few rather uncomfortable fords of glacial rivers: yikes. And you have to time it right...we had six days of glorious warm sunshine and one day (the one requiring a hike uphill between those glaciers) of pouring rain and whipping wind, and i suppose if the whole hike had been like that, we may well have been less inclined towards delight.

Anyway, Iceland rocks. Stopping here.

No wait, someone mentioned Bjork. Genius! But there's also Sigur Ros, which will get you in the belly and not let you go.
