John Fogerty is happy with himself
http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/22/music.fogerty.reut/index.html

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Guitarist John Fogerty first realized he was a failure about a decade ago.

Sure, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 for his work as the singer/songwriter with Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of the great American bands to emerge in the late 1960s.

But when Creedence fell apart in 1972 after a string of top 10 hits like "Proud Mary" and "Born on the Bayou," he spent his time putting out albums he hopes people have forgotten, feuding with his former bandmates (including late brother Tom) and in endless litigation with the boss of his old label.

Disappointing fans and critics was one thing, disappointing himself was something else. It was about 10 years ago when he recalled a vow he had made to himself as a youngster.

1. I've always had a mixture of admiration...
.. and a kind of pity for Fogerty. I love CCR, they are a one-of-a-kind original the likes of which we'll never see again.

But it seemed like his bitterness over getting screwed out of his rights consumed him for way too long. As well as the feuds with his ex-bandmates.

It sounds like he's finally gotten past all that and that is cool! :)

4. Should have been making a comeback in 2000 & 2004
Did he deny use of the song, or is it no longer his?

6. It's not his
For what it's worth, the guy who screwed him out of publishing rights, Saul Zaentz, spends half his time in court screwing people. The latest is LOTR.

3. Saw something on VH1 once
"Behind the Music" or something like that all about John Fogerty. He said something about going down to the "crossroads", Highways 61 and 39 in Mississippi, where Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul to the devil and mentioned having an epiphany. Not sure if this has anything at all to do with this thread, just thought I'd throw that in.

9. Screwed former bandmates at R&R Hall of Fame
Bands get up to play a few songs after they have been inducted. There is no doubt that John Fogerty was the genius songwriter, guitar player and visionary of the band. There is also no doubt that Doug Clifford, Stu Cook and Fogrety's brother formed one of the all-time great rhythm sections. CCR was alchemy.
Anyway, at the ceremony John Fogerty refused to play with Cook and Clifford,(his brother was dead by this point, I think) instead getting up with Robbie Robertson and Bruce Springsteen to play CCR songs. This in front of these guys' families?!
Why do we always make ourselves look so bad when we try to screw over other people.
Anyway, recently got hold of a 1970 CCR concert video. I have seen many, many bands live in my time ... but these guys were hands down the best, tightest, in the groove band I've ever seen. Shame what could have been.
