It was recorded during WWII. An engineer from the BBC went ou to record the nightingale. He set up a tape recorder out in the country (East Anglia I believe) and went to a pub while the wire recorder ran. When he got back to London and played it back it turned out that he recorded swome bombers coming back from a nightime raid on Germany along with a nightengale. It's a very haunting recording. Anyone know where I can find a copy of it? I heard it on the CBC many years ago. I think it was on Max Fergeson's show.
