Poll question: Most hated phrase originated (or so they say) by "Martin" (the sitcom)
All I remember is the E! True Hollywood Story on him (for a change, one actually about Hollywood, but that's another story) where one of the writers was bragging about their contributions to Western culture, which included all the phrases below, one I remembered, the rest from eonline: http://www.eonline.com/On/Holly/Shows/Lawrence/Facts/

I never watched the show, as I find Martin Lawrence as funny as gargling razor blades so I thought all these irritating phrases had sprung up by some kind of idiot spontaneous generation. Who knew?

1. Hate "don't go there" but I'm rethinking my position
on "you go, girl!" Both phrases are now abused by middle aged white folks who actually think that such sayings are hip and clever. Cringe.

5. I did a bit on this eons ago when it was actually contemporary
Went like this:

The new catchphrase is, "Don't go there!" People say it when another person is starting to venture an opinion that might be even the slightest bit negative about any subject whatsoever. People say it to me all the time. When they do, I want to say, "Why not? It's nice there. I spent my last vacation there.

"The kids love it there. There's plenty of things to do there. It's sunny all the time there. Me and Madge are thinking about retiring there. Everybody's so nice to you there. The prices are low there..."

6. The "Talk To the Hand" Thing Is Far Dumber
The "don't go there" thing can sometimes be used to good effect against a hypocritical person. For example, when Bush made fun of Kerry mispronouncing "Lambeau Field" by saying "Lambert" instead. The hypocrisy of Bush criticizing someone for a mispronunciation? Does he really want to "go there"?

8. No, it isn't, just more mean-spirited
The whole thing is "Talk to the hand, 'cause the head ain't listening." A relationship power play, regardless which gender is saying it. (Only ever seen this said on tv; hope real people don't say anything this obnoxious, but I know which way I'd be betting.)

I will admit that I actually used "Don't go there" once when I was hugely pissed at my writing partner. My version, though, went: "Don't go there. Don't go near there. Don't call there and ask for directions" (which at least is comparatively creative).

It doesn't sound the same as it's written, more like "Oh no you di'en'"

Or "Is that your wife, or is your dog walking backwards?"

You got your reply in within the hour editing period, but unfortunately I wasn't keeping that close an eye on the thread. Oh well.
