I don't own a computer right now (except for a very ancient powerbook) so I might have forgotten.

What if you just take the DVD icon that appears on the Desktop and drag it and drop it into the hard drive? I think that then it automatically copies it. That's the way it works with word files and stuff. Seems that the last time I listened to a CD on a friend's Mac that was how we got it into the hard drive. I'd think it would be the same for a DVD, but maybe I'm wrong.
There must be a techie who knows though.

4. DVDs are encrypted just so that you can't do what you suggest
it would make it too easy to copy them. You need to use a special program to decrypt them and copy them, which, technically, is illegal.

like maybe the obvious!
You can tell I haven't been breaking that law.

5. You need to use a decrypting program
there are not very many of them that work with OSX, but I located a free one for you: http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/mtr.html
