Restaurant Suggestions - New Orleans
Mr. Infomaniac and I are in New Orleans staying at the Hyatt Regency, which is within a mile of the French Quarter. We had dinner last night at Ralph and Kakoo's, a restaurant recommended in one of the tourist guides. The service was excellent, the drinks were value-sized, but the food was so-so. We may have caught them on a bad night and the Hurricane did interfere with restaurants getting provisioned. Anybody have any restaurant suggestions in the French Quarter. We're on an expense account, but would still like something moderately priced. All suggestions (relating to food) most welcome.

1. Antoine's. Need a coat and tie.

Arnaud's also very good. (on edit--I don't know if you need coat and tie here)

Breakfast--Eggs Benedict at Brennan's -- to die for.

On a weekend late morning or afternoon, go to Cafe du Monde for some chickory coffee and beignets, sit, laze, converse, listen to the jazz bands play. Or go late at night after partying, it's open 24 hrs.

3. Thanks.
No coat and tie for Mr Infomanic here. He wore business casual. Will keep Arnaud's a try.

Buffet 9am to 3pm daily.....is a sumptuous display of hot and cold dishes. Because we use only the freshest ingredients, the buffet's selections change according to season and time of day. The afternoon's sampling includes Creole jambalaya, turtle soup, oysters Bienville, Duck a l'Orange, and Shrimp Etouffee.

The cold buffet is a creative sampling of boiled shrimp (and crawfish when in season) with your choice of traditional cocktail or Creole remoulade sauces, seafood and pasta salads, ceviche, marinated artichokes, pates, cheeses and a variety of fresh fruit. 6. People will roll their eyes at me..
But this N'awlins native enjoys Cafe Desire on Bourbon Street (a few blocks east of Canal St).

And if you're in the Quarter looking for a nice place to eat breakfast in a drunken stupor, go to the Clover Grill. :)

is definitely an "experience". very small, maybe four tables and a counter.

it's worth it, if only for the lively banter between the staff.

or it's sister restaurant, Poppys (or Poppies?), much more mainstream. complete with mannequin sitting at the counter. be sure to read all the stuff on the walls.

french quarter, absolutely nothing else like on the planet.

edit over poppy confusion

in like forever. Court of the Two Sisters was good. So was Manale Pasquale (sp?) out in the garden district. BBQ shrimp. Is that place still there?

9. The Old N'Awlins Cookery (Sp.?), but not the front part...
They have a wonderful courtyard with soft lighting. Go all the way throough thefront and you will see the waiters in Tuxes and softly lit tables. The marinated Rib_eye is their specilaty and I will vouch for it, as the best I have ever had.

11. Please, please, please, try Irene's on Chartres
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60864-d426288-Reviews-Irene_s_Cuisine-New_Orleans_Louisiana.html

The deep fried, soft shell crab with sweet potato fingerlings is flawless. So is the duck pasta and shrimp linguini. So is anything on the menu. Very romantic spot...Hope you enjoy!

13. ralph and kakoo's are certainly nothing special
I don't pay much attention to tour guides, they are behind the times of the way people eat now. Antoine's, Brennan's, Galatoire's all have good food but maybe a bit old-fashioned at times. What about Nola's or Cafe Giovanni? I don't remember the prices too well as I was comped but it seems like Cafe Giovanni has a tasting menu or maybe it was an early (before 7 PM) menu that wasn't too badly priced.
