1. Yes
I put cardimom into a saag (spinach) dish. Found that it added a bit to the dish-but maybe it was just that I added extra cumin, coriander, and tumeric! Maybe adding some ginger would help making your rice taste better.

24. Then it tastes Morroccan!
They use a lot of "sweet" spices in their cooking and even have a chicken pot pie-type dish that's covered with powdered sugar.

I was in a daze after a long day of snowboarding. I didn't even realize it until I took a bit.

29. Ruined a perfectly good banana nut bread that way
A cup of salt is a very, very poor substitute for a cup of sugar :-) I threw it outside, hoping something would like it at least, but even the birds and squirrels couldn't pallet more than one bite.

6. cinnamon rice is fine
That's a very middle eastern thing to do. If you add some raisins and let it steam, and maybe even some beef, it will be yummy. When my jordanian buddies had me over for a "real american BBQ" a while back, they asked me how I like my burgers - with a lot of cinnamon or a little. :)

My mom, on the other hand, has made beef bouillon ice cream. Not good. (bouillon crystals were packaged like instant coffee.)

8. Ever have powdered sugar turkey gravy?
Well, it looks just like flower. And they were both out on the counter.

I mean, it was a honest mistake.

Oh, an never, ever use anything but French Bread to make oyster dressing. Anything that is not a water-based bread will instead produce Oyster Cinderblocks, suitable for outdoor construction.

Hey, we all make these mistakes sometimes especially if trying to do to many things at once, and the wine is already open.

11. Bread with PollyFilla instead of flour
my mom dropped of a tupperware container of what I assumed was whole-wheat flour, but it was PolyFilla. I threw it in the bread machine.

I still have the month-old loaf; I think I'll keep it as a monument to my stupidity.

15. Worst Thing I Ever Did
I was making a chicken/wine sauce dish.

Accidentally grabbed a blush by accident. The chicken came out looking like salmon.

Oh, the horror. Tasted great, but I've never tried that dish again.

19. Just call it tandoori and it's all good. There are Chinese dishes where
the chicken is all "rouged" up too. As long is it tastes good, tell everyone it was supposed to be like that.

It did taste good, didn't it?

16. Made pork chops
For gravy I thought I put flour in the juice to thicken the solution.

Couldn't figure out why it wouldn't thicken. Lo and behold, it wasn't flour but powdered sugar.

Don't sweat it. Even Julia Child messed up once in a while.

17. Here's one.
I have my patented omelette recipes. One is sauteed mushrooms and parmesan cheese. Had shredded parmesan cheese in a container, little beknownst to me my wife had purchased ground up almonds in a similar container to coat fish with.

Put the almond stuff instead of cheese at the critical omelette step. Didn't even realize until we were eating it and went back to look at the container. Ugghh. This was NOT a hit, not my finest culinary hour.

22. Not me but my Mom..........
Canned her own salsa with fresh tomatoes. It had an odd taste and when I quizzed her on the ingredients she said the recipe had cloves in it. Cloves????? Finally I guessed that it really meant cloves of garlic not the spice. Barf!

23. My Dad did this
My family is New England born so there is a certain bias toward regional specialties. One of which we have high standards on is New England Clam (or fish) Chowder. A classic that is not to altered!

I visit my parents one weekend and my Dad serves up some chowder. "This is good stuff, you'll like it!"

I look at the bowl and try a taste. There is a strange tang to the chowder. I look down at the chowder and notice small green spots.
"What did you put in the chowder? What are these green things?"

Green Pepper. He had minced up a green bell pepper and put it the chowder. I was aghast! YOU DON'T MESS WITH A CLASSIC!! WHAT WAS HE THINKING!!! That was some years ago and to this very day I will not let him forget it. Green pepper indeed!

25. Not I but one of my graduate school housemates
We all took turns cooking, and I often made Asian dishes. My housemate wanted to try some of the dishes from my Chinese cookbook, and being unfamiliar with Asian ingredients, she decided to use that pretty red oil from the bottle labeled in kanji to stir-fry the chicken.

Yep, the "pretty red oil" was "la you" (chili oil), and the stir-fry practically burst into flame sitting there on the plate. It was absolutely inedible, so we threw it out and ordered a pizza.

26. Mrs. Beastman mistook baking soda for baking powder
Back when she was a teenager. She had an Alaskan Malemute named Shambra who used to beg for cookies constantly. When she realized she ruined the batch of cookies, she decided to pawn them off on Shambra. Needless to say, the cookies weren't fit for canine consumption either. Shambra sniffed at the pile of dough and gave her a :wtf: look.

It rained the next day, and the cookie dough mound remained...

27. Growing up relatively poor, Mom wanted to make us
a meatloaf one night, but we didn't have the requisite spices or even green peppers. We did, however, have a packet of taco seasoning. :D

Lot of ketchup and some lying to go with it; Mom thought she stumbled across a masterpiece.
