Need some tune suggestions, my heart is breaking....
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 11:07 PM by steviet_2003
I know that there are many on this board more misic savy than I and I ask for your assistance. My best friend, high school flame, love of my life (soulmate? ya, if there is such a thing) has just moved across the continent.

Through youthful impulses we split up over two decades ago and made very poor marriage choices. But we were reunited online about three years ago and agree that we should have stuck together. Unfortunately, we both have kids that override our personal desires, at least for a few more years. I won't belabor the point but this is a sad, sad tale of unrequited love. No intimacy, except for a mingling of the souls, finishing each others sentences, roaring laughter, etc.. It's hard to explain.

Anyway, I am in Illinois as she was. We'd meet for lunch every couple of months with her mom and/or daughter but her husband was transferred to Phoenix suddenly. There was no time for a final goodbye and I have been having a hard time dealing with it.

I am trying to put together a CD of tunes for her that expresses my feelings but unfortunately, my palate of knowledge in this area lacks. All I have so far is "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Rhythm of the Rain," and "The Long and Winding Road."

She is very much into music, classic rock as well as current tunes and even some newer country. Anyone have any suggestions for this there? I have been a talk radio junkie for too long to know what's out there.

Thanks for any help!

on edit: Tunes can be old or new, rock or country, or anything else that you may think apropos.

2nd edit: typo

3. my heart goes out to you
you will rejoin eventually, trust me - trust the universe

music classsic rock - Robin Trower, other bluesy sounding things, I know this is corny but Lynyrd Skynyrd esp Freebird. Ten Years after. Kind of good hard rock with a blues edge is where I seem to be going maybe you want more romantic softer sound? So much good new alt country where to start?

8. I hope you are right!
Right about trusting the universe, that is. It seems sooo perfect, but for over 20 years the universe has been cruel.

Thanks for your thoughts on the tunes. She has said that she doesn't like blues, but I think most that say that havn't really listened. She moved downstate soon after she married while I remained in the Chicago area. I have spent many a night in blues clubs.

Maybe some Allman Bros. or other such bluesy/rock combos. If you have any specific tunes from Trower, Skynard, Ten Years After, etc. or aly country it would be appreciated!

We dated off and on for 8 years and then had a gap of 22 years. Once we "re-met" it was like we were never apart.

6. God, Rhythm of the Rain by Gary Lewis is the first 45 I ever bought
If you want music from the era, how about the love theme from Zefferelli's "Romeo and Juliet"-the title is "A Time for Us" and it is truly heartbreaking. If you really want to be over the top, throw in "Yesterday" from the Beatles and Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle"

10. IF EVER YOU'RE IN MY ARMS AGAIN
IF EVER YOU'RE IN MY ARMS AGAIN
(Peabo Bryson)

It all came so easy, all the loving you gave me
The feelings we shared, and I still can remember
How your touch was so tender, it told me you cared
We had a once in a lifetime
But I just couldn't see, until it was gone
A second once in a lifetime, may be too much to ask
But I swear from now on

Chorus:
If ever you're in my arms again
This time I'll love you much better
If ever you're in my arms again
This time I'll hold you forever
This time will never end

Now I'm seeing clearly
How I still need you near me
I still love you so
There's something between us
That won't ever leave us
There's no letting go
We had a once in a lifetime
But I just didn't know it
Till my life fell apart
A second once in a lifetime
Isn't too much to ask
'Cause I swear from the heart

Chorus

The best of romances,
deserve second chances
I'll get to you somehow
'Cause I promise now

Chorus

16. Beauty
And The Beast-Stevie Nicks, The Wild Heart also on Timespace and Enchanted box set. She wrote it after seeing John Cocteau's film.
Lyrics

You're not a stranger to me
And you are something to see
You don't even know how to please
You say a lot...but you're unaware how to leave

My darling lives in a world that is not mine
An old child misunderstood...out of time
Timeless is the creature who is wise
And timeless is the prisoner in disguise

Oh who is the beauty...who the beast
Would you die of grieving when I leave
Two children too blind to see
I would fall in your shadow...I believe

My love is a man who's not been tamed
Oh...my love lives in a world of false pleasure and pain
We come from difference worlds...we are the same (my love)
I never doubted your beauty...I've changed
I never doubted your beauty...I've changed

Changed...who is the beauty
Where is my beast (my love)
There is no beauty
Without my beast (my love)

Who is the beauty
Who... (my love)
Ahhh...
Oh...la bete...la bete
Where is my beast

My beauty...my beauty
My beautiful...beautiful...beautiful
Beautiful beast

54. I've got another Stevie song to suggest. . .
I Miss You Now from Trouble-in-Shangri-La:

When I think about you
I think about how much I
Miss you when you're not around
When I think about you
I think about how much I
Can't wait to hear the sound
Of your laughter
Time and distance never matter

Chorus:
Well I miss you now
I have so many questions
About love and about pain
About strained relationships
About fame as only he could explain it to me

Seems like yesterday
I think about how much I
Wish that you were here with me now
The invisible girl that was my name
She walks in and walks out
And I'm sorry now
I'm sorry now

(Chorus)

Paris to Rome, London to Paris
Always goodbye, I nearly couldn't bear it
Her heart settles down
She's back on that staircase
On the way up to her place

The first tune is VERY beautiful -- and rare.
The others are somewhat better known and I am sure you can find them around.
The last two may not be totally appropriate given your predicament, but they are worth a listen, nevertheless.

Wishing you all the best.

19. "More Than This" by Roxy Music
If you can get a hold of "Closer" by Steve Wynn, you'd find it a superlative choice. "Two of Us" by the Beatles, the cover by Michael Penn and Aimee Mann, or the completely different song of the same title by Supertramp are all good. "Ana Ng" by They Might Be Giants has some thematic elements that would probably have relevance for both of you. Ditto "4th of July" by X (long distance relationships, in both cases). A tremendous love song is "Any Time at All" by T-Bone Burnett.

Hang tough. I spent a lot of years as the unrequited love champ, so I can most definitely relate.

Should have been "You" rather than "4th of July" by X, though the latter is fine as well.

PS: "Valentine's Day" by Steve Earle would be yet another superlative choice.

24. She does NOT want to be with him
But she has little choice for the time being. She has two daughters and she is martyring herself for them, as I am for my two kids. Her husband is an alcoholic and a severe mental abuser, whose family has some mob ties. She made a mistake two decades ago and regrets it daily but is scared shitless for her kids at this time. When they are out of the house, anything goes.

There are some things in the universe that are so pure and natural that they transcend the laws and mores made up by human society. Just because her husband has a piece of paper saying they are married does not mean he owns her. If he were to EVER lay a hand on her again, he had better pray she does not have someone like me to come to her aid!

26. And just to clarify!
There has been NO hanky panky! At most a friendly hello and goodbye hug, not even a kiss. All of our meetings have been in the presence of either her mom or daughter and usually both.

Our intimacy has been purely emotional and intellectual, at least since having been reunited. At the present time we are friends only, but OMG, friends of a lifetime!

27. Wherever You Are - by Neil Finn:
Wherever you are
Its 3 A.m. and I’m awake
Imagine the light
Upon your blue transparent face
Through coloured glass
It filters down to warmest red
Faded…….. I’m the one who reads your mind
See my life in your design
True companion at your side
You’re gracious and good
When all around is turning bad
Restless and brave
When laid upon suburban grass
Your timing is right
Remove the sad persistent thought
Hold the course
I’m the one who reads your mind
Sees my life in your design
True companion at your side
I’ll give you something
for when I’m not around
to make you smile
and if you think it then it must be true
if only I could make it through
climb into my bed
wherever you are
wherever you are
your timing is good
remove the sad persistent thought
hold the course
I’m the one who reads your mind
Sees my life in your design
True companion at your side
I’ll leave you something for when I’m not around
To make you smile
Outside that wasteland
And if only I could make it through
If you think it then it must be true
Wherever you are

I think maybe once or twice a month til 11/2. We need to MOBILIZE! The time is NOW for the most important election in our lifetimes.

I hold myself personally at fault more than any, all I effin do is surf the web generally and this board specifically, but Kerry already has my vote. I need to get out there and pound the pavement ot stuff envelopes or something!

Lets all meet in a month and compare notes on what we have done to save our country.

I suppose that it is ultimately up to each of us and our souls, but a prod here and there doesn't hurt.

34. "But not for me"
They're writing songs of love, but not for me.
A lucky star's above, but not for me.
With love to lead the way
I've found more clouds of grey
than any Russain play could guarantee.
I was a fool to fall and get that way;
Heigh-ho! Alas! And also, lack-a-day!
Although I can't dismiss the mem'ry of her kiss,
I guess she's not for me.

She's knocking on a door, but not for me.
She'll plan a two by four, but not for me.
I know that love's a game;
I'm puzzled, just the same,
was I the moth or flame?
I'm all at sea.
It all began so well, but what an end!
This is the time a feller needs a friend,
when ev'ry happy plot ends with the marriage knot,
and there's no knot for me.

George and Ira Gershwin

44. Final kick, downloading tunes and have room for a few more
Thanks to all. Putting it all together now and I have room for some more tunes.

Again, the general themes are kinda "unrequited love," "she's leaving," "i miss her," etc., but I also do not want to necessarily be all negative and sad, an additional themes of "we'll be together again," "someday, our day will come" or something along those linse is fine as well.

The genre is basically pop/rock or country, doesn't have to be an oldie, contemporary is good too. Anything to express sorrow at parting or confidence in reuniting or anything else you guys think apropos, you have been great so far!

48. Another Stevie Nicks/FM suggestion
BEAUTIFUL CHILD

Beautiful child
Beautiful child
You are a beautiful child
And I am a fool once more

You fell in love when I was only ten
The years disappeared
Much has gone by since then
I bite my lip, can you send me away
You touch
I have no choice
I have to stay
I had to stay

Sleepless child
There is so little time
Your eyes say yes
But you don’t say yes
I wish that you were mine

You say it will be harder in the morning
I wait for you to say, just go
Your hands, held mine so few hours
And I’m not a child anymore

I’m not a child anymore
I’m tall enough
To reach for the stars
I’m old enough
To love you from afar
To trusting... yes?
But then women usually are

I’m not a child anymore
No, I’m not a child, oh no
Tall enough to reach for the stars
I will do
As I’m told
Even if I never hold you again
I never hold you again

56. Simple Song - Lyle Lovett
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 04:35 PM by welshTerrier2
this song is very beautiful, very powerful and very appropriate for your needs ... it's also one of my favorites ...

Simple Song
(Lyle Lovett)

It's a simple song for simple feeling
You see the moon and watch it rise
Across the continent the night bird sings
And somewhere someone hears its cry

So disillusioned
Keep your head down
If you do they'll never know
You'll have no answers to their questions
And they will have to let you go

And disenfranchised
Revolution
They'll take away by right what's yours
And make you martyrs of your own cause
When they don't know what cause it's for

And all deserted
Stand alerted
They'll love you when you're all alone
But you find a red rose in the morning light
You wait the night and find it gone

So hear my words with faith and passion
For what I say to you is true
And when you find the one you might become
Remember part of me is you

61. Some Kind of Love
(sung by Kate Wolf)

Some kind of love is like gold
and that is the hardest to hold
Cause it catches the eye of each thief passing by
Some kind of love is like gold.

Some kind of love starts as friends
and that kind of love never ends
It comes on as slow as a flower in snow
some kind of love starts as friends.

Some kind of love, some kind of love
Everyone's looking for some kind of love
Some kind of love, some kind of love
Everyone's looking for some kind of love

Some kind of love comes too soon
but that kind of love heals your wounds
When your wounds are all healed and you're back on your wheels
you say that kind of love came too soon

Some kind of love tears your heart
when you knew it was wrong from the start
Ah, but try and explain the moth to the flame
some kind of love tears your heart.

Chorus:

Some kind of love never dies
and that is the hardest to find
Through the laughter and rage it mellows with age
some kind of love never dies

Some kind of love is like gold
and that is the hardest to hold
It catches the eye of each thief passing by
some kind of love is like gold

Chorus:

I thought this thread was dead but here I click into the lounge and see it on top. Methinks maybe a 2 volume set after all these great suggestions!

Thanks again, I am musically challenged. I like music but don't have comprehension for names and artists and spend too much time listening to AAR these days.

58. Orange Sky by Alexi Murdoch...trust me.
From the album 'Four Songs.' Lyrics:

Well I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
Yes I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my brother standing by
With my brother standing by
I said Brother, you know you know
It’s a long road we’ve been walking on
Brother you know it is you know it is
Such a long road we’ve been walking on

And I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my sister standing by
With my sister standing by
I said Sister, here is what I know now
Here is what I know now
Goes like this

In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, in your love, in your love

But sister you know I’m so weary
And you know sister
My hearts been broken
Sometimes, sometimes
My mind is too strong to carry on
Too strong to carry on

When I am alone
When I’ve thrown off the weight of this crazy stone
When I've lost all care for the things I own
That's when I miss you, that's when I miss you, that's when I miss you
You who are my home
You who are my home
And here is what I know now
Here is what I know now
Goes like this

In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, in your love, in your love

Well I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
Yes I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my brother and my sister standing by
With my brother and my sister standing by
With my brother and my sister standing by

64. Thx Will, quite apropos!
I know you have had your own travails in the past year or so. Sometimes you just know there is one, the perfect one, the ticket to the way your universe should be... A great tune for that is Santana's "Everything is Coming Our Way." It is much along the same line as the lyrics you have posted.

But the harder you try to make it happen, the more you dream, sometimes the more reality up and bitch slaps you in the face. If one could just be able to reach into the mystic and change a few gears...

I am determined to be optimistic, as hard as it is sometimes.

68. sighhhhh.... fair question, tough answer
My wife is not evil, but she had been diagnosed with organic depression. She is EXTREMELY sensitive to any perceived slight, almost any innocent comment can set her off (as well as God forbid your are in her neighborhood if a disaster like breaking a nail happens and you have to listen to how the universe has conspired to make her life miserable.) I, my children, her siblings and parents all walk on egg shells and measure our words carefully. Her siblings, though in the area, deign to expose themselves personally only once or twice a year.

It's a long story, but I was on a rebound and danced with a good friends little sister at another sister's wedding. We hit it off, I found out later she always had a crush on me, but now she was 18 and all grown up. A couple of weeks after the wedding she was a passenger in a bad auto accident, hit her head and was in a coma for a month.

She had some permanent brain damage which resulted in some memory loss, damage to her short term memory system, some motor damage to her left side (can't run, basically) as well as an epiletic type of seizure that manifested itself in the form of severe temper tantrums.

Ok, so I visited her after she got out of the hospital and she kinda latched onto me, and me, being on a rebound and a silly young male complete with the hormones that go along with that, enjoyed the attention, she was attractive.

We saw each other and soon her parents and family were concerned that me, 8 years older that their mentally crippled teenager, was taking advantage of her, She obsessed and my reaction was to be insulted that my intentions were less than honorable. At one point they were considering taking out a restricting order on me.

Anyway, we reached a compromise but I always felt the need to prove myself and my intentions, by following thru. By the time we got married I was 29, she was 21. Stupid me felt the clock ticking and I had been told, and believed, that she would continue to recover from her injuries. she did not... I had reservations, it didn't feel right. When she blew up when I said I didn't care what the flower arrangement on the tables at the reception would be I think I knew. Soon after the wedding she blew up that I had actually thrown away some trash in the garbage can in the bathroom, rather than take it outside. 18 months later we had out first child.

No blame from me except at myself. I am married to an emotional 13 year old who watches game shows and soap operas and has never registered to vote. But have two absolutely outstanding children which has mitigated the situation and forced me to stay in this failed relationship for their sake, they DID need an adult in the house and I have done most of the rearing, as well as shopping, cleaning, etc...

My son started college, my daughter started high school. Due to her band commitments I went to move my son in 360 miles away, I was accused of having "someone" there, in a town I had never before been in (that kind of shit has been going on for 20 years). I don't hate my wife, but you can only take so much. My kids are now past the formative years and soon will be out of the house, my mission, and reason for sticking in this miserable relationship are mostly gone.

Am I a bad guy? I dunno, maybe, maybe not. But I have given 2/3rds of my adult life to a losing proposition for the sake of my kids. Is that enough? Am I to be doomed to continued miserableness because I made a mistake 25 years ago?

It ain't easy (hey, another good tune suggestion!) If you had a choice of continuing to live a miserable life or possibly someday hooking up with your best. friend. ever. who also happens to be of the gender you desire physically and also happens to be the most. intriguing. person you have ever met as well as the most physically attractive even at the age of 49..... Is it ever time for me?

hahahahahahahaha, told ya it was a tough answer.

65. A suggestion
I've had the "Garden State" soundtrack on repeat the past few days and there's a song that fits your situation:

"I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" by Colin Hay:

I drink good coffee every morning
Comes from a place that's far away
And when I'm done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to say
I don't want you thinking I'm unhappy
What is closer to the truth
That if I lived till I was 102
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
I'm no longer moved to drink strong whisky
'Cause I shook the hand of time and I knew
That if I lived till I could no longer climb my stairs
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
Your face it dances and it haunts me
Your laughter's still ringing in my ears
I still find pieces of your presence here
Even after all these years
But I don't want you thinking I don't get asked to dinner
'Cause I'm here to say that I sometimes do
Even though I may soon feel the touch of love
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
If I lived till I was 102
I just don't think I'll ever get over you

Unrequited love--especially if it's mutual--is so tragic!

66. Lonesome tears... Beck

I can't cry them anymore
I can't think of what they're for
Oh they ruin me every time
But I'll try
To leave behind some days
These tears just can't erase
I don’t need them anymore

How could this love
Ever turning
Never turn its eye on me
How could this love
Ever changing
Never change the way I feel

Lazy sun
Your eyes catch the light
With promises that might
Come true for awhile
Oh I'll ride
Farther than I should
Harder than I could
Just to meet you there

How could this love
Ever turning
Never turn its eye on me
How could this love
Ever changing
Never change the way I feel

71. Three Days, best by KD Lang from Absolute Torch and Twang
A happy little tune, until you absorb the words when it morphs into blues.

(Willie Nelson/Faron Young)

Three days that I hate to see arrive
Three days that I hate to be alive
Three days filled with tears and sorrow
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow

There are three days I know I will be blue
Three days I'll dream of you
And it does no good to wish these days to end
'Cause the same three days start over again

Three days that I dread to see arrive
Three days that I hate to be alive
Three days filled with tears and sorrow
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow

I have known a woman since I was 3 days old. Our parents were the best of friends, we went to grade school, university together, but...

She divorced 18 years ago, I'm in the process of ending a 20 year prison sentence of a marriage. We hadn't seen each other for over 25 years, until I moved back here. A few months ago she asked me to help her do something minor.

Life hasn't been the same since. I now believe in love again, the feeling of her in m y arms is so very familiar I might believe we shared a past incarnation together.

When the time is right it happens. Why we didn't end up together 25 or 30 years ago I'll never know, it doesn't really matter, now.

Edited on Wed Sep-08-04 05:58 AM by achtung_circus
Best version I've heard is Ray Charles

You give your hand to me
And then you say, "Hello."
And I can hardly speak,
My heart is beating so.
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well.
Well, you don't know me.
(no you don't know me)
No you don't know the one
Who dreams of you at night;
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight
Oh I'm just a friend.
That's all I've ever been.
Cause you don't know me.
(no you don't know me)
For I never knew the art of making love,
Though my heart aches with love for you.
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by.
A chance that you might love me too.
(love me too)
You Don't Know Me
