Poll question: favorite system of government?
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 07:18 PM by JibJab
i think my favorite still remains representative democracy, despite what Bush has done to it. but let's see what you think...i'll start from one end of the spectrum and work to the other.

Strictly speaking Sweden is a Kingdom - a constitutional Monarchy.

The US postal Service is Government run - does that make the US "Socialist"?

The word "Socialist" has no clear meaning, but a negative ring. It got used by several murderous dictatorships - I would not use it.

13. try thinking for yourself then
seriously, listen to us. Sweden is under the same category as UK, because they have the same formal, legal, and de facto setup. The UK's programs are just as socialized as Sweden's.

16. there really hasn't been one yet.
it'd be my number 2 behind anarchy. some are speculating that this is what china will become in the future decades. the authoritative junta will hopefully erode, but the social programs supported by the county's mounting wealth will remain and strengthen.

27. I believe Sweden is basically capitalistic
with all small business privately owned, but with more large institutions run by the government than in the United States. In France, there is something called a "Regie", such as the automobile manufacturer Renault. It is somewhere between a socialistic structure and private company. A "Regie" is a government-owned institution that must operate at a profit, independent of government subsidy (i.e. they are initially funded by the government and government owned but they must stand on their own, compete, and generate a profit in the marketplace). In California, there is an example of a "Regie" in the worker's compensation insurance field. By far, California's largest worker's comp insurer is "State Compensation Insurance Fund", which was begun with California state government funds and is state-owned but must generate a profit and compete with private companies on the same footing. They are without doubt the most efficient and fair of the insurers in the worker's comp insurance field.

28. yes
Sweden is a constitutional Monarchy with social systems and a capitalistic economy.

(formerly)State owned companies are pretty common in Europe, especially so in France. However there are examples everywhere (Germany: T-Mobile/Telekom, Volkswagen, German Postal Service/DHL, Insurance companies,...)

Anyway, the EU has strict rules on such companies, with the effect that most are being/ have been transformed into totally private enterprises

Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 07:21 PM by Scottie72
I do not really like the US version of a representitiev democracy. I pefer the parlimentary system of countries like Austrailia England...etc..

Where basically it gives a real voice to many parties, it forces real coaliations and cooperation. The two party system winner take all just does not work. I want a real voice in government and politics instead of waiting for the dems to actually start listening and doing something for the left base of their party.

now I see the other

18. are we really a representative democracy?
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 12:07 AM by mairceridwen
Because I thought we were a federal republic.

according to one staunch pro-war, pro-bush conservative I know, we are turning into a socialist democratic theocracy. he says this angrily. his one redeeming quality is that he gives a lot of lip service to the separation of church and state. but since homophobic legislation won't affect him directly, he'll still vote for bush.

anyway...

25. hi, welcome to DU
republic and representative democracy are pretty much interchangeable terms. hence the "republican" party being one of the twp major parties. ours, the democratic party meaning devotion to that same system.
as for your friend: a socialist democratic theocracy? sounds like an oxymoron to me. i think he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about

29. he's not my friend...
he's an idiot who used to post on another message board I like.

he left a goodbye speech today accusing us all of betraying our socialist, blame america first values by voting for Kerry. He also said we are worse than the democratic underground. I never argued with him much, only occasionally to rip apart his twisted logic.

This was the best part:

"Look, Bush is not a conservative. His spending alone proves that. But one thing is clear. His attmept at a consitutional amendment banning gay marriage further proves that. However, he has done more to defend this country then Carter and Clinton combined"

Anyway, I thought representative democracy was the same as republic, but terms confuse me.

22. There is no 'One Size Fits All' political system for every country
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 02:48 AM by TwentyFive
There are many differences between Sweden and the USA....culture, history, resources, population, etc. Sweden is only about 9 million people. Becoming a Swedish citizen is much more difficult than becoming a US citizen.

What works for them, would not work for us, and vice versa. Capitalism & individual achievement are major parts of our culture - and our strengths. We just need to temper them by safeguarding the environment, and caring for people on the edges of society.

I don't think there is one best political system. I think it's naive for us to think we can impose our system on other countries. It's like somebody telling you what kind of car to drive.

Isn't a system of govt, it's an economic system; you could best describe Sweden as being a Capitalist wellfare state with a Democratic government.

32. I was gonna say...

This poll mixes systems of government with economic systems.

I'm also curious how one can say which they prefer, economic or government, unless they've had significant life experience under more than one. Liking the theory and liking the reality are two different things.
