This is so sad.

Man lay dead in bed for two years
Condo fees and bills were still being paid
Body finally found in mummified state

WINNIPEG—His telephone number was still listed in the telephone directory and his condominium fees and bills were automatically being withdrawn from his bank account.

No one knew Jim Sulkers had died in his bed almost two years ago.

Neighbour Sam Shuster said residents in the complex often wondered where the man they knew only as Jim had gone, but were told his condominium fees were still being paid.

"How can that happen, for God's sake. Two years!" Shuster said yesterday of the man who had been a resident in the building since the mid-1980s.

"I used to ask the president of the board of directors where in the hell is he? She said all she knew was the bank gets the monthly money so we don't worry about it."

Yeah, Money's more important than a living human being. God this pisses me off and makes my heart break. I just can't imagine not having anyone in this world care if I'm around so much that I lie dead in my bed for two years.
Poor guy.

2. THAT is insane.
Dead for two years and no one notices. Isn't that everyone's worst nightmare?

On a slightly more perverse note, don't you think the neighbors would have noticed the smell???

3. That was a horrible, shallow statement.
Yeah, well he paid his rent on time, so we weren't worried. What bullshit :puke:

4. Good God Almighty!
There should be some penalty for this... really. Aren't they supposed to fumigate for insects or anything?

How could this happen?

5. OMG. How unbelievably sad
One would have to be a total recluse for that to happen. It breaks my heart to think about it.

7. It was only 3 weeks here.

I live in low-income senior housing. The man 2 doors down from me died in his apartment and they found him 3 weeks later. Fortunately his rent was one week late, so they went to check on him. Had he died earlier in the month it could have been 5 weeks. Afterwards the building instituted a program with little signs that we can hang on our doors. We are supposed to hang out the sign at night and remove it by 10 a.m. If the sign is still there after 10 a.m., somebody is supposed to check on you. I've seen signs hanging on doors all day without anyone bothering to check.

I was so upset when this happened that one of the women who works at my senior center took it upon herself to check on me. If I don't show up at the senior center for two days in a row, she phones the building manager and asks them to come up to my apartment to see if I'm okay. I am truly grateful that somebody cares.

This is Capitalism, folks. Money counts, people don't.

12. That's a great idea!
Of course, we should do more. You guys should make buddies and commit to having dinner with each other like once a week or something.

9. Another victim of the *I'm going to crash diet until my bush tax
cut shows up in my paycheck* diet. And people rag on Atkins.

Sorry for the gallows humour, but the story itself is surreal.

Death by automatic bank withdrawal. Who knew?

10. I live alone...
and always wonder how long it will take for someone to notice I'm not around if I die unexpectedly at home. Since I work, I would think a couple of days of not calling in would do it. But it's a bit disturbing to know that you could be dead for who knows how long before anyone would come to check on you.

11. Same thing happened in an apartment complex I lived in
The guy that parked next to me had an old tuna-boat caddy that was a pain to fit into the space next to me. One day he parks crookedly and I can barely get in. The next day, the same. And the next. And the next ... for two weeks.

Finally found out from the manager that he had died on the toilet two weeks before they found him. In his case, it was a late rent check that lead to the discovery. I took back everything bad I said about him and his shitty attempt at parking :(
