Poll question: Seeking female baby names
Greetings all, I recently posted a pic of our expected baby girl. Now Mrs. McLargehuge and I are stumped in our search for a good baby name. We have a few possibilities of our own to choose from (appearing in the poll) but we'd love to hear what your suggestions are, or to see how you feel about the ones we already have under consideration.

There are a few caveats to our choices. We shy away from overtly Judeo/Christian names and like three names preceding the surname i.e. our son is Ian Manuel Arthur McLargehuge, but I don't know if we can swing it with a girl. We havent assembled a good three name span yet... Maybe you can?

Also, we try to make a cool acronym with the first three initials, i.e. Ian's initials are "I M A McLargehuge, or IM A McLargehuge... Get it?

Okay, so have a look at the poll and tell us what you think. I'll be checking throughout the day.

Also, the grandmothers from both our sides are:

Hers - Zella Viola and Harriet Gertrude (yes, they are yankees)
Mine - Mary and Yvette

AS you can see, our great grandparents were insane.

Also, DON'T you dare name her Irene!

104. Because of the "whale" connotation, Keiko might be out
sort of like my cousin not naming her son Rudolph (after his father) because of the rednosed reindeer angle.

Here are some Japanese names with their possible meanings, which can change, depending on the kanji they are written with:

Akemi: shining and beautiful

Chié: wisdom

Akiko: child of autumn

Harumi: spring beauty

Yoshiko: good child

Sayuri: little lily

Hitomi: apple of the eye

Emi: smile

Ai: love

Mai: dance

Ruri: lapis lazuli

Nobu: trustworthy

Hana: flower

Of course, all of these would violate the condition of the kid not having to explain the name all her life.

47. well
German sounding American names are strange to contemporary German ears.

I'd not pick "Gretchen" for two reasons, both are probably without any relevance for your situation.
The first is the word-meaning: "Gret-chen" means "small Greta", or rather "small Margaretha". It sounds like a nickname.
The other is the Faustian "Gretchenfrage" ("Du you believe in God?"/"Glaubst du an Gott?" ); but that is probably more a problem of German High Schools than with the name itself.

Congratulations to your wife, you and your daughter. :hi:

I wanted something that was not at the very top of the list, but also not unusual... so, we chose "Grace", which was between 15-20th most popular for girls in the previous several years, and 13th in 2003.

26. Try the Social Security website
They have the top baby names by year... go through the list and pick out some non Biblical ones. I just know "Emily" has been the most popular girl's name for years. Just don't give her too unusual a name - while it may be nice when she's an adult, she'll probably get teased a lot as a child & teen.

The two ending Os are jarring, IMO.

Edit:
I also would not go with Matilda because of the similar accent pattern or Irene because of all the long E sounds.

Zella is a very unusual but pretty name. I like the idea of using family names. Maya is nice too, though.

Maybe you should come up with the initials first and go from there. How about DEM? ;-)

I'm partial to names with no hard consonant sounds. Dunno why.

I thought about naming my second daughter Aja... and if you like Japanese names, some that I remember I had picked out were Yoshi, Yasu, Etsu, Kei, Hoshi, Rei, Ruri and Ishi. Forget the meanings now, but they were all good. :) My husband was not at all interested in those, though.

Oh on edit... Risa... another of my 'almosts'. Spanish word for smile or laughter... not sure which.

58. Classics.....
Ruby, Dorienne, Thelma, Doreen, Ruth, Nadine, Gwynne, Alice.....and a more modern version of the classic 'Sharon' is the name 'Sharona'...
if your last name is, somewhat, common.... a distinctive 'given name' will set her apart from all the other Mary Smiths.

P.S. I like Matilda Rose the best of 'the above'.
P.P.S....all three of my initials are 'R', it's a conversation starter, for sure.

63. Here's some good advice about picking out girl's names
Imagine your daughter's name being announced as she is awarded her degree from Harvard. That will weed out all of the too cute names, ie the Misty Dawns and Brandys.

By the way, I like all your suggested names. But how about Mary Viola.

I know that wasn't in the list, but since it was a grandmother's name... many people will not know that the correct pronunciation of the first syllable is VI (rhymes with sigh), not VEE.

101. Not crazy about any of those, but here are some principles to keep in mind
1. No unisex names. No Taylor, Jordan, Avery, or any of those other names that make it sound as if the parents really wanted a boy. There are plenty of great girls' names.

2. No names that will sound stupid when she's older. There's a whole generation in and above the baby boomers who were given nicknames as their real names: Patty Sue, Debbie Kay, Peggy Jo, Candy Lee, and I'm sure there are some names floating around out there nowadays that sound cute on a little kid but will be embarrassing later in life.

3. No names that she will have to explain to people all her life. As someone whose last name is unusual outside of places with large numbers of Scandinavian immigrants (no, my last name isn't really "Leftcoast"), I know In the 1950s, we knew a family whose daughter's name was spelled Yvonne and pronounced "Wyone." I once had a co-worker named "Evea," pronounced "Eva." People who met her for the first time invariably said "E-vee-a." She'll probably temporarily change the spelling of her name as a teenager (so that "Ashley" becomes "Ashlee"), but let that be her decision.

107. Well
looks like my suggestions are a bit too tame for you, but I'll go ahead:

Katherine

Monika (the German spelling and pronunciation)

Erin or Aeryn (not to get too weird on the spelling!)

Rae is good, but a bit Southern sounding.....still different

Julia

Maurine

India (???)

Violet, for some reason I've always loved that name

When we named our daughter we wanted her to have a name that allowed people to take her seriously when she was older (yeah, we were actually thinking about her career). So anything silly-sounding or fluffy-sounding was out.

Just don't let it be McKayla or Mikayla for the love of all that's good and holy.

BTW, my daughter's name is Katherine Monika. Goes by Katie, but can go by Kate or Katherine as an adult, so we liked that. Good, solid, classic, not trendy name.

The woman who had a baby right after me in the hospital had a baby girl, too, and they named her Katherine Grace, because Katherine means "pure."

Pure grace.

Oh and I need to add we decided on Katie as a nickname for this reason: we KNEW, we just KNEW people would hear that her name was Katherine and call her....KATHY. We do NOT like the name Kathy. Just too common (apologies to all Kathys out there!). So we headed it off at the pass. And she really IS a Katie, blond hair, blue eyes, and tons of freckles.

118. My humble suggestions
My husband and I are of norwegian descent, so I have a couple Norwegian names for your consideration ;)

Eli (pronounced Ella)
Freya (my daughter's name, pronounced Fray-a. Norwegian goddess of love and beauty, Friday is derived from Freya)

Zophia (greek, a form of Sophia, from the Gsophos and Sophia, Meaning "Wisdom, Skill." My daughter Gretta's middle name)

And my name is Shiloh, which is Hebrew.

My family is full of weird names. Named my son Aidan in 2002, and shows up in 2003 in the top 10 boy names...man was I ticked.

Good luck :)

120. first of all, congratulations..
This is my first venture into DU Lounge (I tend to lurk in Gen. Discussion and Campaign 2004), and your thread caught my eye.

One of my friends at work just had a baby girl they named "Phoebe."

Some people really like that name. Its Greek origin, Phoebus, was the goddess of the moon, not to be confused with Phoebus Apollo, god of the sun. Phoebe is also a small, brown North American wren. Ever heard of the pee-wee bird? That's her! :)

Good luck and I hope you have a happy, healthy little girl to add to your McLarge family.

Peace,
AL

I voted for maya because it is my name. No, not really. I guess it doesn't matter if a baby I don't know has my name. Well in any case, it's a great name. Multicultural, not too common, not too unusual, people usually can spell and pronounce it. There are some spellings of mya and some pronunciations of may-uh, but it's getting better.
