Adam Sandler is a Republican?
Singer and actress Mandy Moore is furious at being "outed" as a secret Republican in the new issue of America's Details magazine.

The publication's upcoming September edition lists Adam Sandler, Freddie Prince Jr, Jessica Simpson, Shannen Doherty and Moore as silent supporters of current US President George W Bush who don't join the campaign trail and make their political views known, unlike loud and proud Democrats Ben Affleck and Barbara Streisand.

Jessica Simpson and Freddie Prinze Jr. I can understand, but Salder doesn't strike me as the Republican type. Then again, he does play violent sociopaths in his movies...

I wonder who else in Hollywood (other than the obvious - Willis, Stallone, Shwarzenegger, Derek) are closet Republicans?

But now he's in the stooopid category. Or maybe he's in the evil/greedy category? HArd to tell with "Little Nicky".

3. Who an actor/acress plays on screen means nothing of their personal views
Just look at Sean Penn.

If Sandler is a Republican I'm willing to bet it's just because he thinks it's the side to be on if you support the troops and hasn't had a chance to really dig into the truth of this and other issues.

19. I think they can vote however they like
which most probably won't, but they are in a situation in today's world where someone might actually believe something because Sandler or Streisand believes it. I think it would be far better to leave people to come up with their own opinions, or at the very least get their opinions from those around them instead of someone they only see on a screen.

21. You may think that famous people shouldn't speak their minds
for fear that someone might listen to them. On the other hand, I think the free exchange of ideas is a good thing.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

33. disagree
If it were not for the influence of actors and musicians I would be a brain dead freeper. Vocal celebs exposed the truth. As a kid in the 60's and 70's the opinions of my idols mattered. If they said the war sucked or that Nixon was a bad man it gave me the courage to speak up and explore points of view contrary to what most teachers, parents and peers spoke of.

If you feel you need to hide it then you're obviously on the wrong side and have issues.

Where is there any proof she is a republican? If none exists, she can't be "outed."

I also point to her recent starring role in "Saved!" A movie that totally trashes christian fundamentalism and was produced by Michael Stipe.

34. That means nothing
She's an actress playing a role. Carroll O'Connor who played Archie Bunker did commercials for George McGovern during the 1972 campaign. Dixie Carter who played the liberal Julia Sugarbaker is actually a conservative Republican. There are plenty of other examples of actors playing roles that differ from their own personal politics.

By the way, Alan Alda will be playing a Republican senator on THE WEST WING next season, and we know he ain't no rightwinger!

Carroll O'Connor was a hardcore liberal.

And Alda played a Dubya-style warmongering president in "Canadian Bacon". Also played an absolute lothario in "What Women Want".

Richard Dreyfuss has had some of his best recent roles playing evil Republicans.

44. Yeah, but Mandy Moore's character was kind of like Archie Bunker
in that she was making fun of Christian, RW stereotypes, just as Carroll O'Connor was making fun of uneducated bigots.

It wouldn't follow that she would play a part in a movie with a message antithetical to her own beliefs, though I suppose money talks and b/s walks.

As far as I'm concerned, it's just a damn magazine, and it's as likely to be false as it is to be true. We would be wise not to get all worked up just because some hollywood-obsessed rag (though I'm not 100% sure that's what American Details is, don't know much about the publication) claims that Joe Famous-guy is a republican, or whatever.

And I think Adam Sandler is funny, if somewhat predictable.

37. So many names, so little talent!
I knew about Shannen Doherty, but I'm a bit surprised about Sandler.

Prinze is an annoying and untalented hack, so no surprise, Simpson is a fundie airhead: no surprise.

Mandy Moore a repug? Hmm, I wonder why she would appear in "Saved!" which skewers fundies pretty well....

42. Sometimes, someone could be typecast politically by one incident
He may have made an offhand remark once (maybe post-9/11) and people may have taken it to mean he's a Repug. Never heard anything about it.

Obviously we know Freddie Prince Jr, Jessica Simpson and Shannen Doherty are Repugs. Hell, they can have 'em.

But Sandler doesn't talk about politics, so if he doesn't make it anyone else's business, I won't hold it against him.
