6. 'twas but a trifle...
...30 years ago, you'd have been right downwind from lots of steel mills. Well, on days when the wind's coming off the lake, that is.

Today, Mayfield Heights is pretty clean, as you well know.

27. I was born in Mayfield Heights 34 years ago.
You never caught any mill fumes that far east of the industrial valley. Even Cleveland Heights and Shaker were far enough from the brunt of it not to get any soot. Lakewood got (and still gets) some, but the winds tend to blow to the west.

Now, of course, having moved from Mayfield to Tremont many, many years ago, I live less than a mile from the last of Cleveland's steel mills and my house is sooty and the smell can be cut with a knife on some days. Stupid? Yes, I am.

32. Avoid Citrus, Vitamin C
Vitamin C destroys nicotine causing the cravings to return. So stay off the O.J. while using the nicotine gum.

35. Just One of Those Factoids Picked Up From Bio Chem Class
Alcohol has a psychological association to cigarettes; it's hard to drink and not think about cigarettes.

16. This is gonna sound weird...
...but it worked for me.

Do the normal things, like drink a lot of water and take naps if you can.

And get a bottle of Frank's Original Hot Sauce. Take little sips out of the bottle when you get your strongest urges to smoke. The mouth and throat irritation from the pepper sauce resembles some of the effect you got from smoking and makes you feel like you did something. I recommend the Frank's sauce because it won't actually slough your mucous membranes off like Tabasco or some of the other brands would.

After the first three days it gets a lot easier.

(But I tell ya, I never used to dream about smoking when I actually smoked. Now I do, five years after quitting.)

i used to dream about smoking right after i quit and they were so convincing, when i would wake up from them i felt as though i had actually had one and momentarily-sometimes longer-believed i had done the deed!

24. You're grossly misunderstood.
The smokes were part of the deal DURING the phone call, but that didn't matter, because I didn't have that sweet nicotine pumping through my veins at the moment. Besides, I'm making dinner anyway...

28. 3 weeks after my wife quit smoking
I found her sitting in the middle of the laundry room, with clothes and cats all around her, crying her eyes out. I asked her what was wrong. That was a big mistake, she hissed worse than the cats. I immediately went to the store and bought her 2 packs of smokes. Shes much better now.

21. The Physical Cravings Only Last A Few Days...
after that you're home-free.

Well... you still have to fight the PSYCHOLOGICAL cravings, and you still have to learn what your triggers are and make changes in your life to avoid those situations that make you want to smoke.

GOOD LUCK!
