Boy Kicked Out Of Scouts After Spilling Cheese On His Spaghetti
<snip>

The parents of a Vernon Boy Scout are suing the organization for ousting their son after he accidentally dumped an entire can of parmesan cheese on top of his spaghetti during a weekend campout in May.

According to the suit, filed Aug. 23 in Newton Superior Court, during a three-day campout in Sandy Hook with Troop 404 in May, 11-year-old Robbie Kent tried to sprinkle some parmesan on his pasta, but the cheese had "formed a large, ball-like chunk," according to legal papers.

When Robbie opened the top of the can to unglue the ball of cheese, it all dropped on his spaghetti.

Troop Leader William O'Mealy told Robbie "not to get up until he ate all of the cheese," the suit alleges.

The suit also alleges O'Mealy said Robbie was "wasting troop money." The exchange left Robbie so shaken that he refused to leave his tent, according to the lawsuit.

After the cheese incident, Robbie's parents, Timothy and Adahyliah Kent, requested a meeting with troop leaders. At the end, all three were kicked out of the troop, the suit said.

1. I'd leave in protest over Parmesan "cheese" in a can!
That Scoutmaster has no business being in charge of young men. He's ill-equipped for the job.

10. For scoutmasters
Molester-staches are mandatory.

Man, say what you want about the positive influence of scouts - the whole organization and the adults involved creep me out something FIERCE. We're talking since I was little and they still give me an uneasy feeling as a parent of a kid who used to be in the Scouts. Something is seriously wacked about a dude putting on a den outfit and thinking he's your kid's parent.

This case really doesn't surprise me one iota.

19. Watch The Moustache Stuff!
I'm neither a scoutmaster nor a pedophile. There is NO correlation between moustaches and either nerdy or antisocial behavior.

There might be correlation between having a moustache and being a jerk! There's Saddam, Stalin, Hitler, and me. That can't be a coincidence.

32. It takes way more than just a single stache
to be a Scoutmaster creepster.

Some of it has to do with wearing dark blue jeans that ride up beyond the waist, or having 1983 Jan Michael Vincent hair, or even the remote desire to wear a uniform with badges meant for adolescent boys.

I'll tell you who's creepier and deserves an assbeating - the country powertripping nerdsters that run the boy scout day camps. Yeeeeeesh.

43. Whatever
I'd suggest that you seek psychological counseling for whatever deep seated emotional trauma it is that has made you anti-scout leader. It's not normal to have that kind of uneasy reation to someone who's simply wearing a uniform.

FYI, I'm Akela to a pack of 8 Wolf scouts, and I wear my "den outfit" at every meeting. For many of these kids, scout outings are the only chance they get to interact with nature, to form social bonds independent of their classrooms, and to particiapate in organized play outside of the bounds of their schools. The uniforms are simply a way to see each other as equals, and as a part of a bigger "pack". As the leader, I wear my uniform because the kids (and society in general) should see their leaders as a PART of their pack, and not as some seperate entity arbitrarily directing their actions. There's nothing wierd about it...except in your head.

We MUST draw the line somewhere or else where will it end?
some where in my Scout oath is something about being CHEESE minded.

14. okay, I admit I got kicked out of Webelos too
I was a little atheist 'mo and refused to say the "Lord's Prayer" at a meeting.

Dad was military, we lived in Germany, convinced me to back down, so I agreed to their punishment: repaint the scout hut on base over a weekend.

They gave me 12 gallons of green paint, and then I spent all of my accumulated allowance on a gallon of bright pink paint. I painted all of Saturday, and most of Sunday, and then I put the pink polka dots on everything from the roof to the mailbox.

Unfortunately, I had also convinced some of my fellow Webelos to help me "vandalize" government property, so I got in a deep deep shitload of trouble, and so did my dad. And I also told them I would do it again, which didn't help my cause.

22. how did I turn out?
I have learned a few things:

1. Tyrants and dogs chase things that run. Learn how to fight. Then stay and fight.
2. Believe in yourself even if it sometimes means frustration, tears and loneliness.
3. Question everything you know or think you know incessantly.
4. Be a good person. Give a damn. Be the things you believe in.

I'm not done "turning out" yet! Hopefully a decent human.

Special Forces. Used to always say stuff about "Charlie" to warn us how it would be when we went over there.

"Charlie can hear that parmesan cheese spilling out boy! That would have got the whole platoon lit up!"

Then he would put us in stress positions; "front leading rest". What fun.....

Lovely tiny little Texas cow town that. I was the only one speaking during graduation (salutatorian, though not a great achievement in a class of about 100) who was not wearing the NHS stole around my neck. Whatever... :eyes:

47. One of the problems with scouting even back when I was involved
was the power trip some adults were on. It was really sad to see.

I was lucky, for the most part. I had adult leaders who were genuinely committed to the positives that scouting had to offer.

Despite my generally positive experience with scouting, I would not involve any child of mine now. The organization has devolved into an intolerant group of narrow-minded bigots.

51. Not really. What you and other anti-scouter's here fail to realize...
...is that cub scout packs are primarily run by the PARENTS of the kids in the pack, and reflect the values of the parents running them. Because of this scout packs vary WIDELY from region to region, and even from neighborhood to neighborhood. If the scout pack near you doesn't promote the ideals you want, contact your local council, take a training course, and ask to form a new pack. If there are enough kids to make a pack work, these requests are rarely turned down.

I'm a den leader for a group of Wolf cubs in a pack that stresses environmentalism, service to the community, cooperation, and integrity to the kids involved. The pack leader is Asian, two other den leaders are black, I am openly bisexual, and the majority of our kids are low income and minorities. This mindset that scouting is dominated by straight white militaristic Christians is total bullshit, and shows a disturbing lack of education about an organization that so many here are so quick to profess as evil and demented.

It's true that the National Council unfortunately has some fundies at the helm right now, but you have to remember that the national council has very little real effect on the activities and interactions of the boys in the dens and packs. They pick the colors of our uniforms and define the requirements of the merit badges, but there is no oversight or management of the scout packs by anyone in the BSAA above your local council.
