I think my automatic update for SP2 is screwed up...
My computer was downloading it, then I lost my dial-up connection. It's been registering 45% for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnng time.

Any suggestions? (Besides the obvious "get a different browser"?)

1. Don't do it. It screws up drivers on everything from drives to
printers and software packages.

7. Same here. Not a problem at all.
I did turn off that annoying "security center" service, but it's been very stable for me.

2. get in on CD
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 06:25 PM by Kellanved
It'll be on the coverdisk of PC-magazines (at least it is on this side of the great pond).

Also you can order a CD from MS, or ask a friend with broadband to download it and burn it on a CD.

Download for the SP2 (2nd Edit- now it is in English):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A

You can order a free CD here (2nd Edit: corrected):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

On Edit: The order site should go online tonight, but that may be subject to change. If it isn't online by tomorrow, ask again ;-) .

5. My automatic update for SP2 hasn't come in yet
Have others not gotten it yet through AU?

I'm afraid to get the version for multiple computers - something may interfere with my computer.

6. AFAIK the two versions are identical
I had that fear too, but it works fine and by all accounts there is no difference other than the initial download size.

8. "get a different browser" isn't really an option since ms SEEMS to
download best on IE...i haven't downloaded the Sp yet and since i don't -erm-use IE or allow it out through my firewall, i'll probably wait until they work some of the bugs out...or until their server is less busy.

what you MAY want to do is , instead of directly downloading the program, click to 'save' option and put it in a folder-like 'my documents'. when it says download successful, close everything down and open 'my documents', then open the file...this should install the sp onto your computer.

at least a tech at gateway said this is how downloads should be handled...if you have an interruption, you can toss the file, no harm no foul...

there is supposed to be a cd rom out later this month, an option i would look into if i had dialup
