Favorite song ever?
'Cause I'm fickle, mine varies among In Paradise by John Wesley Harding, When You Make Up Your Mind by Gutterball, Ana Ng by They Might Be Giants, and Even the Queen by Too Much Joy. Today the latter takes the taco.

Yours?

2. Two I keep coming back to

"All I Wanna Do" by the Beach Boys off of Sunflower. The elegance of the production and atmosphere is just god-like in that song. "Living Too Late" by the Fall is another genius song for atmosphere.

7. I love the distortion on "All I Wanna Do"
and the delay on the vocals. It's got a very spaced-out sound to it.

10. Definitely--you can usually trust Brian Wilson for a great bass sound
I think there are two basses on there--one distorted/fuzzed and one clean. He uses a similar organ technique on "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times." The delay effect was interesting, and it's one of the few really pleasant Mike Love lead vocal performances out there. :D

12. That's their best album in terms of sonic clarity, IMHO.
Incredibly well-recorded. And it has some great songs, too. "Slip On Through," "All I Wanna Do," "Our Sweet Love," "Cool, Cool Water," "Deirdre," "Forever," and "This Whole World." Dennis and Brian really dominate that album as songwriters.

I think it was the last album Brian was really involved in until 15 Big Ones, which is a mediocre album at best. It's their second best album - on some days, I'd put it first.

fyi, "Dark Side of the Moon" isn't a song. you're probably thinking of "Brain Damage" on that album, which is when they actually sing "i'll see you on the dark side of the moon". i thought that was the title for a long time, too, until i tried to download it, and couldnt find it

22. I still have Monty Python on copy/paste so.....................
Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle.
And this'll help things turn out for the best.
And....
Always look on the bright side of life, (whistle)
Always look on the bright side of life, (whistle)
If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle, that's the thing.
And...
Always look on the bright side of life. (whistle)
Come on...
Always look on the bright side of life...
For life is quite absurd,
And death's the final word,
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin,
Give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death,
Just before you draw your terminal breath,
Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it,
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show,
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And always look on the bright side of life,
Always look on the right side of life,
Come on guys, cheer up.
Always look on the bright side of life.
Worse things happen at sea, you know.
Always look on the bright side of life.
I mean - what have you got to lose?
You know, you come from nothing,
you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!

24. "Maria's Beautiful Mess" by Ellis Paul
Edited on Sun Aug-15-04 12:27 PM by legolassie
Ellis Paul is my favorite musician ever -- even edging out James Taylor, which is saying a lot in my book. There is not a song of his I don't like. I've seen him perform live a few times (just him and his guitar), and he is an amazing acoustic guitar player and performer.

http://www.cdfreedom.com:8080/ramgen/ellispaul/1/Mess.rm (Real Player)

on edit: this is only a 2:00 excerpt, added lyrics

She fell to the mattress
with the grace of an actress
You’re falling like a thief from a roof.
She’s asking for proof, "Are you staying?"
Outside you hear mission bells.

Welcome to Maria’s beautiful mess,
In a cluttered apartment on the West Side.
She pulls the blinds while,
You watch how her dress falls round her.

Chorus
And the world slows, a clock shows
A wrinkle in the flow of time
And she steps close, her eyes glow,
Lips pop open like a bottle of wine

And she loves like it’s thirst
Like she’s never been hurt,
She dances just like nobody’s watching.
Is this love? Is this cursed?
It feels like the first time falling
Nobody’s watching, Nobody’s watching,
Nobody’s watching, watching

Now she puts on some music,
She asks you to choose it
You sang her back a Gershwin line.
Now Ella is singing holy, soulfully
Bringing up better times

And beneath the tunes,
She’s smiling on an unmade bed
She says, "What’s in the middle that scares you,
Does it dare you
To take a moment and just slow down?"

Chorus

Pull the curtains all down
On the prince or a clown,
She’s smiling like the Mona Lisa.
You could conquer this town.
If your feet touched the ground,
But you’re falling boy
I know, I see you
I see you, I see, I see,
I see you

37. That was my mom's favorite towards the end
For her 75th birthday, she wanted to sing Jesus Loves Me rather than Happy Birthday, so we did. From then on for as long as she could understand speech, I'd sing it to her whenever she was upset.

Not implying anything about your mental state, of course...
