Update on router problem- new question
Yesterday I said it was restarting every time the AC went on, losing the connection for a couple seconds. (No problem browsing, but enough to lose connection to programs) It seems that isn't exactly true, it's doing it all the time now. At seemingly random times, all the lights will go out, the red diag light comes on, and then it fixes itself. I have a BEFSR41, I think ver 2, but maybe 1. I know it's not ver. 3. Looking around, a lot of people are having this same problem, but all the posts I find on it are from before the latest firmware was released, which I have, so I don't know if it's the same problem. Anyway, question is, is the thing dead? Do I just need to buy a new one? I don't like the looks of the new ones since Cisco bought Linksys, but if it would fix this...

1. Look for the latest firmware upgrade...
And try reflashing the ROM. If that does not work, send it back for service.

Personally, I would recommend you go out, buy a used pentium II class computer, put a small HDD in it and about 128 megs of RAM, and a 5 port switch and load Smoothwall 2 into the computer. The best money can buy, and damned if it ain't free.

2. some stuff I found...
""With UPnP enabled the router resets itself intermittently but frequently, from several times a day up to 20 times/hour."

The UPnP code in 1.46.00 is abysmal, to say the least. Totally unusable. Its the very worst UPnP IGD stack implementation I've yet encountered for the BEFSRxx series, or for any gateway, period.

The problem gets worse though - with MS Windows XP SP2 RC2 installed, virtually any UPnP action results in the reset/loss of WAN connection

Firmware version 1.46.00 (and 1.45.11) is an abomination when it comes to UPnP. You'll have to use an earlier firmware version to get any potential stability and functionality"

Ok, so.. I have no idea what UPnP is. However, I seem to have it enabled. And I have 1.46 (the newest). So it would seem I should either disable it or downgrade the fw. What would I be losing if I disabled it?

3. Turn off UPnP!
It is a security hole you can drive a truck through and you do not need it!

Get SafeXP and turn it off! Free.

7. Are you sure it is your router?
Could it be your ISP?

8. hopefully the end of the story...
yes, I'm sure it's my router. I can.. um.. hear my router.. routing... er... i dunno, I'm special? But I can hear it emitting different high pitched tones depending on how many things are plugged in, and if it's working. And it's doing the "i just got unplugged" one, not the "there's no isp" one.

Regardless, I just bought a new router. got the version 3. Sadly, all the lights on the front have been reduced down to 1 per connection, so you can't see the status... and, on another plus side, I can't hear this one! no more awful screeching noises in my head. Of course, that's the only way I knew the other one wasn't working, soo... but yeah. No problems yet. I just hope it stays that way.
