1. What is the context?
Because I don't even understand why he'd be talking about wondering which child to pick up....

and talk about fear-mongering! Yeah, let's hit on a human beings' WORST freaking fear: something happening to their CHILDREN.

People who have no kids or only one kid, I guess it doesn't work on them!

6. There was very little context.
He was just blabbering.

With all that money, it's a really good thing that the GOP adds suck so mightily.

9. Even to mention 9/11 in relation to his ads is the
lowest form of stupidity..because what was bush doing on 9/11?

Besides the infamous 7 Minutes? Bill Maher pointed out that 20 Mintues after that he was doing MORE Photo Ops!

While New York was burning!

20. I haven't noticed they care about

people >with< kids either.

I was noticing a post on DU about a mother and a father being called up in the lastest back door draft. And who will care for their children?

I, myself, am child free. But this stuff reeks to high heaven.

any of her children, I have two little boys and two arms to carry them both.

This is such bull shit!

In the movie Sophie's Choice, Meryl Streeps character is forced by the Nazi's to choose between her two children, one will live and one will die. She spends the movie dealing with her decision. The situations are completely different: Nazi's forcing you to choose vs running from a burning building, sorry but I would imagine that as people were fleeing from the building, a mother with more than one child in the building would find someone to help her carry her children.

No, they never politicise 9/11. I hate Carl Rove.

7. Shrub was playing his "compassionate self this time.
Toward the end of the ad it has shrub saying how much he feels for the victims of 9/11, and how could a parent have to chose which child she would have to pick up first after that attack.

23. My reaction to it was, if I had someone die there, I'd be pissed!
I realize the idea was to make shrub look careing and "compassionate". But when I saw it, the first thing I thought was, if I had lost someone in the 9/11 attacks, I'd view this as using that tragedy for your political gain, and I'd hate you for it.

I have no idea how the rest of the country is going to respond to it.

10. The add is this
Bush is sitting next to pickles and he talks about how he couldn't imagine what a mother felt having to choose which child to take with her when 9/11.

Seriously

BTW - if you've never seen Sophie's Choice - Meryl Streep played this Holocaust Survivor who, during the Holocaust, was forced to choose which child she could keep and which child would pretty much end up in the gas chambers.

I know what "Sophie's Choice" is but I don't get what the ad means by that question in relation to 9/11?

It didn't stop me from telling someone at work about it, today though.

18. yes....this has been discussed on TV, even.
most thought it was a really BAD commercial, one that leaves a person scratching his/her head.

it's impenetrable, unless you realize that it's just the latest in a desperate, obvious, hamhanded series of attempts to maintain us in a CONSTANT state of FEAR!

you think they don't KNOW how DEEP down on the shitranch they are?
unless they can do a combo of scarin' it out of enough people, combined with, once again, RUINING the name of a once-courageous, albeit, wrong-headed former COMBAT soldier (ok, sailor; so sue me).

this was commented on today or tonight; can;t remember, but the talking heads--"respected" ones, who you all know....I'm too out of it to remember--SAID that he has no chance on the economy OR Iraq.
the ONLY ONLY thing he has going is TERROR! they SAID that, not in so many words, but pretty much as I've put it. I almost fell over, to hear them admit it. I think it was tweety's show, but I can't be sure.

that's what this is a DIRECT appeal to, and a clumsilty desperate one. I don't see HOW it can work.

WORSE than that first one. with the firemans's body. You have to see it to realize just HOW pathetically, bizarrely, desperate this thing is.....just begging you to HOLD ON TO YOUR FEAR!!!

that's IT! HOLD ON TO YOUR FEAR, my fellow murkins! that's all I have to offer you: FEAR today, Fear Tomorrow, and FEAR! until November THIRD. then, we can forget about it, let our guard down, and just WAIT and see how fast a real attack happens.

but I digress.....get the idea?

13. HERE'S WHAT BUSH SAID IN THE SOPHIE'S CHOICE AD:
I can't imagine the great agony of a mom or a dad having to make the decision about which child to pick up first on September the 11th. We cannot hesitate, we cannot yield, we must do everything in our power to bring an enemy to justice before they hurt us again.

First, 9/11 attacked the World Trade Center, not Mom & Dad's park avenue apartment. Second - this isn't the Holocaust, Mom & Dad weren't choose which child would live and which child would be left behind to die. In fact they could probably grab more than one kid at a time or even have old kids take younger kids. I mean, it's not like we're finding families with 15+ kids living in NYC. I'm sure parents just rounded up the kids and moved out of the house if they were actually being evacuated.

15. That's right
Every time I hear this stupid ad I get a "what the fuck" feeling in my gut.

It's scary and it makes no sense.

And then he's got that sedated, chain smoking, vapid, empty, devoid of any personality, stem cell bashing, boyfriend killing, demon spawn spewing, chimp dick sucking, neck hold submitting, wrinkled, dried up, tobacco stained idiot of a wife sitting next to him.

These people scare me.

Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 11:44 PM by Valerie5555
as in the story of Betty and Mahtob Mahmoody's lives had Mahtob actually been NON IDENTICAL TWINS of any sort.

Especially if Dr Mahmoody was a bastard and told her okay she could return to the States with Mahtob, but she had to leave their son in IRAN with him.
