Anyone ever made hypertufa
Hyper-what-a???????

HYPERTUFA: It's a material made from cement, sand and peat moss. Used to make garden planters, sculptures, etc. It's supposed to weather to look like real rock, attracts moss/lichen etc.

My questions ... how 'real' does it really look, and how heavy is it? From pictures I've seen it does in fact look realistic, and weight-wise, I guess is about 60% of the comparable weight of concrete?

I need to make a large, hollow fake rock (don't ask) and would like to get some input before embarking on my project.

1. OK, I know you said not to ask
But I can't help but wonder why you're making a large, hollow fake rock. :)

2. And do you need your large, hollow fake rock to attract lichen? n/t

3. OK - you had to ask ...
I'm into Geocaching (see avatar) and want to construct a large, cache hidden inside a rock. Rather than drill out a real rock, I thought I'd just make my own!

5. I have a friend who does geocaching
I can ask him about this for you if you want. I bet he's familiar with this material.:hi:

4. You're in Eugene, Oregon; so it can't be for hiding weed...
...after all, who there would care.

If placed/partially buried near or under large leafy plantings, it will blend well. If you distress it well to get rid of artifacts from the casting and then overdo it to simulate natural weathering it will be quite effective.

The page you link to has some very sound suggestions for attracting lichen and/or moss...they are the best camouflage of all. In fact, after looking at that page, it tells you just about everything you need to know...except weight.

Your estimate doesn't sound wrong that wrong to me.
