My beloved Jessie has just had major surgery. :(

Dookus, you are right. I am the worst pet owner in the world. During James' birthday party on Sunday, Jessie started getting a little lethargic, and my mother in law told me she was on her monthly...only problem, Jessie is fixed. I told her so and didn't think anything more of it.

Later on, when I went to call her in, she didn't come in. (she had hung out under the porch all day) The kids finally coaxed her inside, and she was trailing blood. :( So at 9:30, after my baby had suffered all day I ran her to the emergency vet. The did some x'rays and you wouldn't believe how many stones were in this poor puppy's bladder. I didn't even know dogs could get the equivalent of kidney stones...

They kept her overnight and operated to remove the stones. They also flushed out her bladder, which was red to bright purple because of irritation. Shame, shame on me. The vet said it was odd to see this in a female dog so young.

She's back home now, and slowly starting to perk up. I cannot believe she didn't utter one tiny little cry for all the pain she must have been in.

I am hoping that this was just a one time thing. We've changed her diet to C/D dry and will get the results back in a month. I only hope I can forgive myself. If not, she's on a plane to you Dookus...

2. It really is incredible how stoic dogs are regarding pain.
You're aren't a bad pet owner...obviously. If you didn't feel bad then maybe we could talk.

13. Thank you Donkeyboy.
She is too good to me. She put her head over my shoulder when we went to pick her up.I really don't know what we'd do without her. Thanks again.

3. From a vet................
I just work on cats now, but when I used to treat dogs many years ago I occasionally saw dogs with severe bladder stones as you describe. She will be ok as long as there are no complications from the surgery in the next couple weeks, but it is VERY important to know what type of stones they were so you can make an effort to prevent them in the future. Rest assured the misery for your dog was all BEFORE the surgery, and she is already feeling 99% better!

14. They sent them off to the University of Minnesota, which does
stone analysis. Until the results come back, they have prescribed a C/D Dry diet. I do believe she likes it better than the Diamond that we had her on. She gobbled it right up. Thanks for your input.

4. Don't be so hard on yourself!
Sounds like you got her help as soon as you realized she needed it. You had a birthday party going on, lots of distractions. I've had pets get sick before, you can't read their minds and they can't talk - it's tough but you did right by her.

I hope she has a swift recovery!

15. I try telling myself that, but I just feel rotten. She's going to be a
hard one to keep down. She's already trying to race around only to find that she is not very steady on her feet. Thanks so much..

5. I'm sure she feels much better
without all that crap in her bladder. Make sure she drinks plenty of water to flush herself out. And ask your vet (if you haven't already) for some nice pain medication for her. Once you have the stone analysis, be totally strict with her diet and get a urinalysis done every few months or so to make sure the problem isn't recurring. Give her plenty of TLC and she will be fine!

16. Thank you very much sleepyhead.
She's been spoiled all day. Sat on my lap and is now in her bed at my feet. We are trying to keep her kind of groggy because she is already wanting to play.

Thanks again

6. Laura, who is that georgous little boy!
Related to you?

Listen. Dogs are very hard to know when it comes to pain. They are very stoic and you should not blame yourself for this. This is a beautiful dog and you are a wonderful mother...don't beat yourself up over this...dogs are heroic and they are sufferers and we are usually the last to know. I've been through similar things and all I know to do is watch the eyes and how they are eating. Other than that, who really knows...even your Vet. :-)

9. Please feel better....
What a beautiful girl Jesse is. I know how you feel. We recently
missed something that had been going on with our guy and beat our-
selves up terribly. Then a vet explained it's in their blood to
not let us know when they are in pain, as basically they were
pack animals and could never let other animals know they were in
trouble. It's their survival instinct. Sometimes I think they just
try to protect us because they know how we hurt when they do.

She has youth on her side and you - she'll be fine. So sorry both
of you had to go through this. Hugs...

17. He's my son...the newly minted 6 year old, James! Hard to believe
as I just picked him up out of the bassinet yesterday.

When I got her in the house and noticed the moisture was leaving her nose and that her eyes were getting bloodshot, I knew we had trouble...then at the vet when they lifted her leg up and got through the fluff, and I saw all the blood I just lost it. :( She is only one given to whimpering when she's not really hurting, only looking for attention. I am never ever going to do this to her again.
Thanks so much Raven,
Laura

I think she is well on her way. The brightness is back in her eyes, and her ears are back up. I am so appreciative of all the kind words here because I really feel horrid about it.

19. Thank you so much!
I was worried that she wouldn't want to come home with me. Then when they brought her in and her tail started wagging, it broke me up. That all she wanted to do was come home with us did a world of making me feel a bit better. She's going to become quite a princess (worse than before) after this.

Thanks again,

10. well
I won't use THIS occasion to point out how badly you treat my dog.

Don't beat yourself up - animals are often remarkably stoic about their pain. You did everything a responsible dog-mama should do, and she's going to be fine.

Give her a big hug for me.
