So..I go to see this stand up comedian
My wife and I met my best friend and his girlfriend (first we've met her) for dinner Saturday night and then we went to a comedy club-at a new upscale open air mall.

Warm up go was okay, a magician did a 5 minute skit, the headliners girlfriend ("Lana Turner") came out and sang some funny songs and was very funny, and then the headliner comes out....

It was Ralphie May the VERY large comedian who was on "Last Comic Standing". I saw his picture as we went in but didn't know who it was until he came on stage. I had seen a bit of him on TV--yeah very funny (change channel)--- and he was HILARIOUS. All four of us were absolutely losing it-funniest comedian I have seen on TV or live in a long time. Lots of stuff about race in America, anti-PC stuff.

So he gets to the part where he says he will have CD's DVD's for sale (usually followed by the last set of material) and he says that he went to Iraq on a USO tour (everyone applauds-his girlfriend had mentioned it too) and how the call came from the WhiteHouse. No joke for or against anyone and THEN-BAM! WE DID THE RIGHT THING IN IRAQ- WE BROUGHT THEM FREEDOM-I FLEW OVER MASS GRAVES OF 300,000-I HATE THE 9/11 COMMISSION THEY WASTED $48 MILLION OF OUR MONEY-I'VE SEEN WORSE STUFF DONE AT PARTIES THAN AT ABU GARHIB............

My wife asked if we could leave. I said we should wait it out. Our friends were behind us (god awful uncomfortable ill-designed seating) and I didn't want to do anything to make them feel uncomfortable. Smatterings of applause-one piece of trash in front of us stood on her chair and clapped until we, others, and management told her to get down-several people left. We walked at the end and just looked at each other WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!!??!?!?

If he was a political comedian fine but good lord that was totally out of place. I didn't pay to have RW Rush-speak screamed at me I paid for a comedy show.

1. Ralphie done jumped the shark already.
You have to grudgingly admire such ruthless efficiency. At career destruction.

5. Good point-my wife said something like that too
Besides being in (or near) Richmond Va. it is "safer" to spew right wing crap because lib/progressive/Dems tend to know how to BEHAVE. My wife said that if someone went off on a "Bush is a liar and a murderer" rant there would be a heightened chance of bottles and such being thrown, they apparently don't know how to BEHAVE. No home training.

3. Saw Ralphie's Reich Wing Tendencies
on TV. I wouldn't have been surprised. I don't think his other stuff is very funy either. He's not very clever.

Like I said I hadn't seen that much of his act. Okay it was guy-type-stuff but it was (IMHO) very funny until......

4. I Saw Him on Last Comic Standing
He pissed me off with his bullshit on that show. I had thought he was at least moderately funny, but then he started with his routine to defend George W. Bush and basically turned into a non-anorexic Ann Coulter.

I knew I was done with him at that point.

If you ever get the opportunity, however, Dave Mordal, Corey Kahaney and Rich Vos are all infinitely funnier than Ralphie May. Vos is kinda right-wing, but when he tried to tell his pro-Bush jokes in Lansing, MI about six months ago the place was silent. Dave and Corey were much funnier anyway. Dave Mordal is my hero.

7. well
to be fair, if he spouted liberal opinions, you probably wouldn't say "I paid to see a comedy show!".

He has a right to say it, you have a right to walk out. I saw Jay Mohr last year, and he pulled the same kind of crap at the end of the show - spouting a bunch of racist, rah-rah shit. I simply won't see him again.

But a couple weeks ago I saw Linda Ronstadt, and SHE got political and I cheered. It's all good.

8. Nope Nope Nope not true
Hsi girlfriend "Lana Turner" actually had a Dick Cheney lyric in one of her songs. I thought it was funny but it was a blip in the rest of the act, she didn't GO OFF on it. A little is fine but not a 10 minute rant.

10. I dunno underpants
I wish I could see one of Bill Hicks' ten minute rants about politics. I didn't like some of his material but boy could that guy rant about politics - wish I could have seen that live.

11. See now if I had gone to see Bill Hicks or Bill Maher ...
that would be different. (not to put them in the same class)

If I go to see Carlin or Dennis Miller (Larry Miller for that matter now) I would expect to hear about politics. Maybe I should have expected it but the worst part was that it wasn't even stated as a joke just a screamfest.

12. That's just because he's a sucky comedian
A good rightwing comic would at least make it somewhat funny. Most of them aren't any good, obviously. Hicks is funny. Maher is funny. Are there any comics that spew RW stuff and make it funny? Hmmmmm....

13. I thought he was funny
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 09:28 AM by underpants
for the most part. Not cerebral to say the least but funny. Not the funniest I have EVER seen (Jake Johanson (sp?)) but funniest I have seen in a while, the market is flooded.

14. Oh yeah... oops!
Sorry... forgot you enjoyed the rest of his show. I saw him once on that stand up show and thought he told a couple of chucklers, but other than that... he's just not my type of comedian. Glad you enjoyed most of the show, at least. :)

15. I didn't like him last year on Last Comic
while he was funnier than the kid that won, he lost it because he was so obnoxious off stage to everyone else and he lost votes because of that.

His whole demeanor turned me off.. now I know why - he's a repuke.
