Can Anyone Translate Hindi Into English?
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 02:07 PM by arwalden
Actually... I'm not even certain that it's truly Hindi or if it's just pseudo-hindi-sounding lyrics.

Below are the lyrics to the intro chant of the song "Sad Diamonds" from the movie Moulin Rouge. Unfortunately I've been unable to Google a translation... so I was hoping that someone here might be able to translate these.

Thanks in advance!

Chamma chamma re chamma chamma

Re chamma chamma baaje re meri paejaniyaan
Tere paas aaun teri, saanson mein samaun...

Chamma chamma re chamma chamma
Chamma chamma baaje re meri paejaniyaan re
Chamma chamma baaje re meri paejaniyaan
(chamma chamma)
Baaje re meri paejaniyaan...
Re meri paejaniyaan (eh, chamma chamma)

(Eh, chamma chamma)
(Chamma chamma baaje re meri chamma)
Oh, yeah yeah... oh uo uo...
(Baaje re meri paejaniyaan)
(Baaje re meri paejaniyaan)

Tere paas aaun teri
Saanson mein samaun teri
Tere paas aaun teri
Saanson mein samaun raja!

2. Thanks Redqueen... that would be great!
I'll be embarrassed if it's just gibberish... but at least I'll know.

3. Here's a translation
Chamma means jingling (as in bells). Moulin Rouge used only a short sample of the original song:

chhama chhama... Jingling, jingling,
chhama chhama baaje re merii pai.njaniyaa.n... Jingling, the bells on my anklets sound!
tere paas aa'uu.n terii saa.nso.n me.n samaa'uu.n raaja... I'll come near you, I'll sink into your breath...
terii nii.nde.n churaa luu.n I'll steal away your sleep
chhama chhama... (with a) jingle...

4. Wow! I'm SEVERELY Impressed With Your Googling Abilities...
That's FIERCE!

And if you didn't just now Google it, then I'm impressed with your esoteric collection of bookmarked sites.

Very cool! Thanks!

5. I DID Google it.....
but I had a headstart. My partner is from India, and we're both big fans of Moulin Rouge, so I had a slight edge because I knew the song title and the original film (China Gate).
