Well, actually about ammo.
I know how "gauge" is measured in shotguns.
Caliber in rifles and pistols is relatively straight forward. It's measured in 1/100ths of an inch. (non-metric bullets)
Thus a .45 caliber automatic shoots a slug that measures .45" in diameter.

So how do they measure a 10 ga., 12 ga., etc.?
If you ask nice I'll tell you.
