What has been your Favorite Commercial ?
I know here in the past, at DU, we've dissed commercials we hate
but are there any that you've really loved?

I think one of mine was the scene where the Guy was in a "Womans"
movie (stuck between two crying, sobbing females and the poor dude is rolling his eyes and thinking "Oh, Brother")

He then remembers that he has brought in a bottle of beer and proceeds to open it.....his eyes lighting up!

Well, the poor f*cker drops his beer on the floor and it rolls down the floor out of his reach.

The next scene shows him sobbing uncontrollably with the women comforting and consoling him. ..... thinking he's "touched" by the movie.....LOL!

You may not have seen it in the US but I assure you, it's the funniest thing you will ever see. UK commercials are by and large far, far superior to anything the US agencies come up with.

4. Muppets!
This was in black and white, and I've only seen it once on a retrospective of the Muppets, but they had Kermit the Frog, and I think a Grover-like character, and it was in black and white - years before Sesame Street and Jim Henson made it big. Kermit is pointing a cannon at Grover and asks him what he thinks of this one coffee. Grover says, "Well, I don't really know... I don't drink coff..." *BOOM* Kermit swivels the cannon towards the camera. "What do YOU think of so-and-so coffee?"

7. My favorite commercial of all time was an anti-smoking
Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 11:22 AM by Art_from_Ark
public service commercial featuring a catchy Western ballad-like song about "Johnny Smoke" that appeared for a time in the late '60s/early '70s:

How many saddles will be empty tonight?
How many men will lie still beneath the stars?
How many tears will be shed because of you?
How many more will DIE?

48. Maybe this is the rest of it
Out of the land of the tobacco plant
Comes a tall, fast-drawin', long lean bloke
Feared by his friends and enemies alike
Feared by all who come to know the name of...Johnny Smoke!

How many saddles will be emptied tonight?
How many men will lie still beneath the sky?
How many tears will be shed because of you?
How many more will DIE?

The "DIE" part always struck a chord with me.

Ironically, my favorite non-public-service TV advertisements from that era were almost all cigarette commercials

Most all of them had snappy jingles or theme music. In fact, the earliest commercial I can place with certainty in my memory is a Kent commercial from '62 or '63. Fortunately, I was much too young at the time to be persuaded to go out and buy a pack:D

It's a riot. Also like the AFLAC one where the women were talking about the insurance, the camera panned around and the duck wasn't there. Cut to a scene of the duck sitting in a club in Vegas enjoying a Wayne Newton show.

11. Meow Mix
The guy doing the crossword: "what's a four letter word for great taste", etc. The cat keeps going "MEOW" at him, then finally, he gets it, and says to the cat: "M-E-O-W...why didn't you say something?"

The cat turns to the camera and rolls his eyes...

Actually, anything with a talking cat gets me. And the AFLAC duck.

12. My latest favorite was the...
toyota/honda/nisson/etc small SUV ad.
It's the one where all the gen-whatever "young adults" pull up to a deserted location in the desert.
The girls are nervous and a little afraid as they get out of the car in the dark.
suddenly the lights on the vehicle are turned on revealing the rock wall they are going to climb and everything is OK.
The best part is the sound track. It's just sound FX until the lights come on, then it's the opening guitar chords of the
VELVET UNDERGROUND'S "HEROIN" .

I fell out of my seat the first time I saw this. It ran for about 2 weeks, then got pulled and came back a month later with some generic guitar strumming replacing the VU stuff.
I'm sure somebody got their ass handed to them over this.

20. Shooting the gerbil out of a cannon
I can't remember which Dot Com it was, but they made several commercials implying (one hopes) cruelty to animals. In this one, they were trying to shoot a small rodent out of an air cannon through the O in their name/logo, and kept missing.

It was so sick I couldn't control myself laughing.

I'm sorry. I had to confess this outloud.

I love animals, but it was just so, well, twisted.

33. That was Outpost.com
Not a strong presence anymore (division of Fry's at this point). Their 3 spots were outrageous.

The other one with animals had the animals being cruel to humans: they turned a pack of wolves loose after a marching band.

A third spot had them tattooing their logo on the foreheads of children.

They directed people to the Web site to register their complains. Their site posted a letter from the American Humane Association assuring the animals weren't really mistreated. Nothing about the kids, though.

Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 11:49 PM by northwest
The little kid says: "Hey, Mean Joe, you played GREAT today!! And... and... I REALLY think you're the BEST!!... You want my Coke??"

Mean Joe: "Naw, that's OK. You enjoy it."

Kid: "No really, you can have it!!"

(Joe takes the Coke and slugs it down with a parodical version of the theme playing, ignoring the kid)

(Kid walks away, dejected)

Mean Joe: "Hey kid..."

Kid (turns around, eyes gleaming, thinking he's gonna give him something special, like his JERSEY): "YEAH??..."

(Joe tosses the Coke bottle at him)

Mean Joe: "Don't forget to recycle."

(Kid walks away crying)

"Grab a Coke and a SMIIILLLLEEEE!!!!!!"

Barky (standing next to sign showing the time of the water show): You know, someone should make a sign that says when the water show is. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN THE WATER SHOW IS?!

Little kid: Are you really Barky the dog?
Barky: Barky the dog is a cartoon. I'm a grown man who's made a lot of baaad decisions.
