What will it cost you to play DOOM 3?
And I'm not talking about your personal relationships, which will all slowly fall victim to your compulsion. No, rather, I'm talking about cold, hard cash ...

Doom 3 system requirements revealed, theme online
http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/07/20/news_6103036.html

According to id CEO Todd Hollenshead, here are the system requirements.

An Nvidia GeForce 3 graphics card or ATI Technologies 8500: Column author Dwight Silverman says that given the game's demanding visuals, serious gamers should splurge for a GPU from Nvidia's GeForce FX or 6800 line or ATI's Radeon 9800 or X800 series. He says more frugal PC owners can make do with a GeForce 5900XT or a Radeon 9600XT.

A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500: Though these will run the game, Silverman suggests a 2GHz Pentium or equivalent, with the "ideal" processor being 3 GHz or over.

384MB of memory: Again, Silverman stresses that this is a minimum requirement, and he recommends 512MB at least, with 1GB preferred.

Two GB of hard drive space:. Four GB is suggested if your PC is running low on free space.

So, $40 bucks for the game, $1500 for a new system. I hope HL2 is better engineered. :sigh:

1. The next killer app should be for businesses...
Businessfolk won't like thin client technology once servers get overloaded and bandwidth strangled... LOL.

Anyway, I'd have to upgrade my CPU (Athlon 2100@2700). The rest of the ideal specs I match or pass.

If Doom3 has Linux binaries, the GeForce 4600 would suffice, though the 5900 or better would FLY. (the 4600 in Linux is comparable to the 9800 Pro under Windows, believe it or not.)

I gather Doom3's graphics and sound are supposed to be superlative; the best ever for any PC game... the high sys requirements suggest there's a lot of complexity.

7. It's like a pendulum, isn't it?
Client side heavy, then everyone rushes to n-tiered serverside, then back to fat-clients, back to server-based models.

I'd personally love it if business consumers had nothing but dumb terminals like the airlines. Or linux, because people just ~love~ installing their favorite bullshit screensavers - bringing their normally fast systems to a crawl - complain about it - complain about being given their system back with a fresh copy of windows - repeat.

2. 1.5GHz?
I bet Doom3 would run like molasses in winter on that piece of shit processor. I'm thinking that the lowest I would run Doom 3 on is a 2.4 GHz chip. Too bad mine is fried right now.

:(

4. Sheesh!
I thought they were taking longer to whittle the game down so it would play on a maximum of systems. Or am I finally going to have to admit that games are starting to really, really tax computer systems.
Half-Life 2 is supposed to run on a 700 mhz system with a DirectX 6 compatible video card, but I heard recently that it's been upgraded to a DX7 vid card and somewhere above a 1 ghz processor.

6. I have a GeForce3, but an Athlon 1.4, so I'm 100 MHz shy. Shit.
But that's okay, I don't have any time to play games in the first place

8. If your 1.4 Athlon is a1600XP, then it's above the specs...
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 07:49 PM by TroubleMan
You only need and Athlon 1500, which is 1.34GHZ if you have an AMD (Atlhon - not Duron) :), but you'll need a 1.5GHz if you have an Intel.

That's because the 1.4 Athlon runs like 1.6.

LOL...The AMD Opteron 2500 (at 2.5GHz) operates faster than the 3.4GHz Xeon.

9. hmm,. it's an Athlon-C (the absolute last of the line before XP) 1400
It handled RTCW really well, however, and I understand that Carmak started writing the lighting with a GeForce1, knowing it would be horrifically outdated by the time of completion - lowballing it at first in order to not let the minimum specs get crazy.

10. $0.00
I'm not going to buy it. I'll just wait for Star Wars: Cosmic Battlegrounds. Its a BF 1942-stytle game with a SW flavor. Its due out in Sept.
