3. The Committments.
The movie was the soundtrack.

But I really liked that movie, too. One of my favorite "music movies".

For a "real" soundtrack, I liked "The Fog of War" and the "Spiderman" soundtracks.

36. Hard Day's Night
I'm not sure if you are going to accept a movie oriented around music, where the music is itself an actor, however, as opposed to a film where the music is meant to play no greater role than reinforcing the mood of what's on the screen.

In the case you accept a movie solely concerned with the music being performed lived, then Woodstock or Monterey Pop might be included.

Zappa's 200 Motels had some very interesting music although the film itself was bizarre.

2001, A Space Odyssey is one of the great adaptations of classical music to a film, with a piece of music that came to be associated with outer space and the space program for awhile. Platoon is another example, with a piece of music that came to be associated with the very image of the war.

West Side Story and The Sound Of Music for great filmed musicals.

I thought that Elmer Bernstein did some very effective work in giving his movies a very distinctive flavor, in The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape. I also think the soundtrack in Dances With Wolves was very effective in making the movie so much more than what it was.

Seriously. It's really good.

Like every Hollywood-blockbuster soundtrack it has some stinkers, like the Offspring and Brandy, but it also has U2, PJ Harvey, Massive Attack, Mazzy Star, The Flaming Lips, Nick Cave, Michael Hutchence, Method Man, etc.

It's a really great CD that you can probably find used for dirt-cheap.
