I keep getting a "lexplore" error message
And my computer tells me it is going to shut down.

My computer is really bogged down speed-wise and I can accumulate many of these programs running after an hour or so.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? What is it? Do I have a virus? Can I fix it?

I do not have an anti-virus. Is there freeware for anti-virus?

1. Try Major Geeks
Edited on Thu Jul-15-04 06:26 PM by Don_G
They have several free anti-virus programs available for download.

Also get AdAware and Spybot to keep the adware and malware out of your system. They're available through Major Geeks too.

Q3JR4 posted very good hints about vira-related matters. The free AVG anti-virus is always a good place to start.

3. If you are running Win98 or Win98SE
You can (in addition to getting a virus scanner) go start, programs, accessories, system information... click on it.

When it comes up... click the drop down menu for Internet Explorer.. and select repair... if you have corrupted IE files.. this should repair/replace them.. and a reboot afterward finishes it up... this is easy simple and I have done it several times with no ill effects... (it is a good tool).

7. "Windows ME"
Doh!!! I hate to say it.. but that might be your first problem... but looking on the bright side....

You might try this... it seems like a "free" utility.. that looks for basic pc errors related to your windows operation...

http://www.pcbugdoctor.com/
>>Don't think your PC has errors? Our research shows that over 94% of all PC's that are over 30 days old have hidden errors that can cause system crashes and data loss. These errors are caused simply by installing or uninstalling software that leaves traces of itself in your computer, this is but one of the many types of errors that the award winning PC Bug Doctor can fix.<<

Now... this company puts out a totally free Dos version of its virus scanner.. and it works rather well.. http://www.f-prot.com/products/

And don't forget to run an anti worm/trojan program Adaware is free... and what it might not catch... Spybot usually does...

Adaware uninstaller: yes

Spybot uninstaller: yes

It is a champion. I am going to hold off on spybot because my hard drive is pretty full.

However, thank you very much.

4. Ok, first of all...
1. You might be angry, but you have a computer. You aint no Amish.

2. You have a combination of spyware and trojans on your system.

3. No antivirus... THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP!
4. THWAP!

5. What the hell is an Amish doing with porn dialers on his or her system!?!? THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP!

..err anyway:

Restart your computer in safe mode. (hit f8 on the butter churn before it starts up)

Select "Safe Mode"

click -start-, -run- and type MSCONFIG

click -ok- or -open-

click the -startup- tab...

Uncheck anything and everything that looks like bullsh.. err.. flotsam and jetsom. "w6aasd6d4dfd.dll", etc..

Click -OK-, then reboot the system.

At this point, you -might- be able to get to the windows desktop and install a reputable antivirus. Then again, you might have disabled a browser highjacker and your internet no longer works... ugh. You'll have to load old bessie on err.. old bessie and haul 'er into town.

6. Disabled about six things
Seems to have cleared it up. Thank you very much.

BTW, the Amish don't believe in anti-virus, English. It is considered a form of gambling.
