On a sign in front of a church
Today I saw this sign in front a church:

"Pray for our troops.
Pray for our Leaders."

I had to do a double take driving by. Everyone is tired about what is going on and had enough. Pray for our troops is about bringing them home safely.

But pray for leaders....What??! Pray for no more big mistakes...Pray that we send them home on election day??...Pray that God sends a message to them??

What do you think the praying for our leaders is about?

4. Probably the same as the Freepers praying
for Bushidiot every friggin day. I wonder if they had that sign up when Clinton was getting shafted by the pukes?

5. "May God continue to bless America"
:eyes: God is not blessing us. Unless God is for the wealthy (uh, God isn't... the Bible actually speaks out against the wealthy and especially greed...)

I dropped my church the day they mixed their sermon with pro-repuke shoveling. And they're a MCC that's pro-gay. The very type of church * won't recognize as being official (yet the Moonies, a CULT, is official... hmm...)

6. Essentially it means pray for Bush and Cheney without appearing that they
engage in the political process directly. This way they can say "pray for Bush's re-election" without losing their tax exempt status.

I've seen a "Pray for our President" billboard on one of our churches but it was taken down as fast as they put it up. Maybe somebody complained about that church to the IRS? They are walking a fine line. I would rat on any church who is pressuring church members to vote for Bush.

8. They need our prayers
because some of them are obviously going to hell!

Yes, those signs are usually a not-so-subtle way of saying we should support whoever is in office. Oddly enough I didn't see that so much during the Clinton years.

9. Being a lapsed Christian
In most churches, there's a big emphasis placed on praying for those in power. The point is pretty much to pray that they make good, "Godly" decisions. What constitutes a Godly decision depends of course on the beliefs of the church. It isn't necessarily gung-ho God-loves-Georgie-boy fundamentalist spiel.

On an added note, Christians are encouraged to pray for their enemies as much as or even more than for their friends. I remember hearing about some churches praying for Osama bin Laden in the days after 9/11, I guess in the hopes that he would turn from his sin and accept salvation. Praying for people is often considered an important aspect of winning their hearts to Christianity.

I used to believe all that stuff hook, line and sinker. Now I'm not so sure.

10. Oddly enough, my pastor dropped pray for our leaders
from her weekly prayers shortly after Abu Ghraib. She still prays for the people of Iraq and other war-torn areas, and the safety of all troops in and around Iraq.

11. What bugs me is...
the word "leaders".

In a democracy the correct term is "...public servants."
