Horror flicks on DVD.
Are there any good horror movies on DVD? I just bought a DVD player a couple months ago and was really excited when I went into my local video store and saw all this stuff that I suddenly had to choose from. But now it seems that a lot of it is really cheesy, low-budget, straight to DVD crap. Suddenly, it looks as though there isn't that much of a selection after all. Can anyone steer me towards some good horror on DVD or is there just a huge cottage industry of straight to DVD crap out there?

14. I don't care what you think of it, but Independence Day
does not belong in the Hall of Shame. I loved that movie.

2. Dead Alive
One of Peter Jackson's early films. Be prepared to laugh you self silly though. This is in the vein of Evil Dead horror/comedy. Though Jackson's is by far the more hilarious.

4. Buy or rent Bubba Ho-Tep
Just released on DVD in May.

Story involves Elvis, JFK, and a soul sucking mummy in a nursing home in Texas.

Great little movie on so many levels. Proof that you don't have to redo an old story or have a mega budget to make a good film.

6. Bubba Ho-Tep was great
loved the melancholy tone it had. One of the few horror movies that made me care about the protagonists.

Thankyouverymuch...

And the commentary track from "the King" is priceless.

9. Is that actually...
...being characterized as a horror movie? I didn't know that.

10. If your player is region-free ...
I'd recommend two recent horror films from abroad:

Ju-on: The Grudge (the first theatrical version, not the TV/video versions) -- freaky-ass Japanese horror in the vein of The Ring, but with all extraneous non-freaky bits removed and the freaky bits amplified to a disturbing degree. Soon to be remade in the U.S. with Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Undead -- Australian zombie/sci-fi/comedy flick in the tradition of Dead Alive. Just out on Australian (Region 4, PAL) DVD.

I don't think either has been released in the U.S. You might be able to rent them through a service like Nicheflix.

For recent American horror, I'd recommend Session 9. And of course, there are dozens of worthwhile horror movies on DVD from bygone eras.

11. Also check out NetFlix.com. They have a good selection
of horror movies. And they are less expensive than renting from a video store.

17. Two foreign psych thrillers
The Vanishing (do not see the US remake)

The Comfort of Strangers (stars Christopher Walken)

If these two movies do not freak you out there is something wrong with you.

19. Here's an enormous list of horror DVDs
Courtesy of one of the mods at DVD Aficionado:
http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=dvdaf.cult.horror

Reviewing my own humble DVD Aficionado list, here are some lesser-known horror flicks that have been released on U.S. DVD:

Audition -- deeply disturbing flick from Japan's Takashi Miike. Not as gory and over-the-top as the same director's Ichi the Killer.

Below -- tale of a haunted submarine from WWII. Claustrophobic and creepy.

The Changeling -- an oldie (ca. 1980) but a goodie. Since you liked Session 9, I think you'd like this one.

Dahmer -- not particularly gory or violent, it's more of an effort to understand what made Dahmer tick. I really enjoyed it, though it appears I'm in the minority in that regard. Could loosely be classified as a gay-interest film, I suppose.

The Devil's Backbone -- period-piece ghost story from Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Blade 2).

Dog Soldiers -- decent werewolf flick from the U.K.

Versus -- horror/action/fantasy from Japan. Cult favorite.

21. More on "Dahmer"
If you ever have the chance to show a single film to Rick Santorum, this would be the one. Wall-to-wall gay sex, gay sex zombies, gay necrophilia, etc. ... treated in a tasteful, almost sympathetic way??? Santorum's head would friggin' explode.

It's not a film for everyone, but here are some positive reviews:

Didn't find it to be terribly scary but it was an interesting and unsettling character study as far as it went.

20. Highly recommend watching the original "Halloween"
remastered version on DVD. It was originally shot in 2:35 - 1 Panavision, so watching the original aspect ratio is a completely different experience than the version you've probably seen on TV or VHS...

22. Japanese movie again: Audition
Psycho thriller. Never able to hear the phrase Kitty Kitty Kitty ever again.

The phone call scene.... that should be the point where you start to freak.

23. You should specify...
Do you like gory, gross-out stuff, or suspenseful, creepy stuff like ghosts?

24. I lean more towards...
...suspenseful and creepy. Gore doesn't do much for me. If I'm in the mood for gore I just pop in my copy of "Dawn of the Dead". That'll usually do me.
