1. I LOVE "Reckoning"
Their darkest record. The compositions are terrific.

2. What ever happened to them?
Man, Peter Buck's Tuatara rocks but what about the rest of 'em?

3. No fucking clue. But I did see them back in August.
The show was actually pretty good. They mostly played GOOD songs. They even played "Maps & Legends". Buck is still a terrific guitarist.

7. Yes, I have. Pretty good stuff. We see where the real talent is.
Although, to be fair, Mills is a good bassist/keyboarist and Stipe has a unique voice.

9. Mike Mills was my favorite in the band
Thats what led me to ask what happened to the rest. My feeling was that Peter Buck was the least talented of the four so how come he has the good solo gig when Mike Mills was the best?

6. More "good" albums by them than what's on your list
I like everything they've done (yes, even UP) at least a little bit, although I haven't heard their most recent album yet.

I love the song Ignoreland from "Automatic for the People" and I also like several songs from "New Adventures in Hi-Fi". Therefore, I can't really vote for a favorite given the parameters of your poll, but I would probably go with "Green" just from your list.

11. REM was the last band
I troubled myself with going out of my way to another city to see. Around the Monster album time.
Can't think of anyone I'd do that for now....

8. I vote for "Green"
for "World Leader Pretend" and "The Wrong Child". I had that on tape in '88 (I think) and I wore it out. Need to start replacing my childhood on CD.....

18. Green
and Murmur, although The Chronic Town Ep was the first one I heard. Sigh. I love those guys. Still do, although they don't move me the way that they once did.

I really need to go to bed, a friend and I had a road trip to the R and Roll Hall of FAme in Cleveland ( long drive) today, but I am full of caffeine! I keep getting pulled into your most excellent posts!

17. I think it was a great darker sounding REM album
I love most of REM's stuff. I will agree their early albums were better.

22. I almost forgot to mention
In early August I am visiting my husband who is stationed in Georgia. My sister will accompany my daughter and I. We are driving from Indiana and will stop in Atlanta to stay with friends of hers. We will then proceed the next day through Athens to look around and see what we can see. We both grew up listening to R.E.M. in an area that has more country stations than churches. We are very excited to be able to go there!

24. The IRS albums were the best, of course
But they did alright on WB too. Until Bill Berry left the band, at which point they completely fell apart. Who would have thought it would happen that way, since Berry's drumming wasn't dominant in the band's sound the way that Keith Moon's was in the Who, or John Bonham's in Zeppelin, but nevertheless, the chemistry just wasn't there. Still love Michael, Peter, and Mike for what they've done in the past, but these last two albums, I just can't get into.

In the early 90's somebody asked Peter Buck how long he thought REM would stay together and he said he figured they would probably end up playing their farewell concert at the millenium New Years eve. Maybe they should have stuck to that plan? Get Bill back for one last tour and then call it a day, if you can't be a band anymore. :(
