the best BBQ sauce!
i'm firing up the grill for some ribs today...what is your favorite store bought brand? i know y'all bbq freaks aren't going to post your "secret recipes", so just the store stuff, please.

i nominate KC masterpiece, with bullseye coming in a distant second. 1 just love the sweet, brown sugar based sauces best! most of the others are either too vinagery or too tomatoey. kc is just right!

and yours?

2. Buy your favorite
And doctor it. Add mustard, garlic, heat, sweetness, lemon juice until you get exactly what you want.

My favorite BBQ sauce is Everett and Jones. It's available locally around Oaktown and by mail order, I believe. I eat it on everything but ice cream.

3. Sonny's! From the BBQ chain in GA and FL. Yum.
Been too long since I've had it. :-(

Love their dark, sweet sauce.

Hungry now...

Residents always know where to find the real thing!

on edit: What more appropriate topic to FLAME ON than barbecue?

6. But The Real Thing is often putrid
to me. :D

But even at the good one-off BBQ places that I've visited in GA I've not found a sauce that pleases my palate anywhere near as much as does Sonny's dark one.

I repeat: YUM! :P

You dare refer to the One True Barbecue-- north GA pork with vinegar sauce-- as "putrid?"

Well, there's no accounting for taste! :-)

21. Oh, like totally gag me with a spoon
Never did like sweet tea, or iced tea of any kind (finally got me a minor taste for Arizona honey-ginseng tea and the like) and I'd take multigrained muesli and broccoli beansprouts anchovy honey Poupon alfalfa bread any day over the Wonder kind...

Don't like catfish, either.

In summary, I was not a very good Southerner.

But I DID love the banana pudding. And fried okra. And BBQ. :D

12. To make it worse (man, they won't even let me back in GA), I only
usually order BBQ chicken. :o

Though I do find yummitude in the shredded kind of BBQ, as a sandwich, whether chicken, beef, or pork (Lloyds frozen stuff included). I am not a BBQ purist, apparently. :-)

...Stubbs. Yes, it's Texan and please don't despoil pork with it, but otherwise I think it's one of the best bottled sauces that's widely available. I routinely use it on barbecued tri-tip sandwiches-- that's what I'm having for dinner tonight, as a matter of fact!

7. I like Bullseye.. and I get so much grief for it
Being from Kansas City, if you don't use Gates or KC Masterpiece you're considered an outcast. IMO, both of those brands suck. Bullseye isn't great by itself, but used as a base I can turn it into a kickass BBQ sauce. I usually add brown Sugar, honey, vinegar, cayenne, paprika, chili, basil, black pepper and worcestershire sauce. I always BBQ with dry rub and brush on the sauce half way through.

I just used it on some BBQ chicken thighs last night and practically had an orgasm while eating them.

26. KC is good stuff, but use ketchup and make your own...
It's better...

Ketchup, juice of a lemon, some kind of onion (Juice, minced powdered--whatever you have), brown sugar, honey, and whatever heat you want in it. Nuke it to the point the brown sugar dissolves and then re-spice it...

Sorry--but I just don't buy sauce very often unless I'm in a hurry or feeling lazy. :)

This is spicy, so if you like KCM, you might not like that.

GAWD I miss that. Denver has the absolute WORST BBQ in the world! :puke:

Gates is famous for the employees yelling at you. It's quite a shock the first time you go in there.

"Hi! May I help you?"

28. I can't stand the sticky, sweet, candy
barbecue sauce myself, but it takes all kinds. Stubb's original is pretty good. I like to thin it out a little. Wicker's is an excellent base, but requires so tomato sauce. I've found a little orange flavoring at the very end of creating your sauce is an excellent addition to almost any sauce.

30. I'm glad to see I'm not alone in disliking
sweeeeeeeet barbecus sauce. If I buy any bottled sauce I always have to add vinegar to it to cut the sweetness. I like a barbecue sauce that has a bite to it so I usually throw in a little habanero pepper in mine.

36. Agree with KC Masterpiece as a base. Add to it:
a little minced garlic
some onion powder
tabasco
liquid smoke (if you're a heathen and not using hickory chips with charcoal)
splash of rye whiskey
Mix that all together to taste and you'll have a good grilling sauce
