What do DUers donate to?
Out of curiosity, interested in the organizations we donate to. I bet, knowing this group, it's a lot of darn good ones, and I bet we give an awful lot money together.

For me:

Greenpeace

NRA and NRA-ILA

ACLU

My churches (pledges, paintings for auctions, other $$$ gifts for specific occasions, offerings of my skills and talents, and time)

White Gifts (gifts for kids of prisoners at Christmas)

Some other Christmas gift program for low-income kids that I've done through my employers

DU

My fraternity's Educational Foundation

My local fraternity chapter

Brooklyn Academy of Music

My seminary

All my old clothing (that's still wearable) goes to local homeless and low-income places (usually Riverside Church or else Salvation Army)

Between all of us at DU, I bet it's a lot of groups (and a LOT of overlapping! though I bet few are giving to NRA-ILA), and a lot of money. But let's not talk about how much money, eh? No need for a flame war...

Come on, DU, let's celebrate our generosity and dedication to making the world better!

4. Sadly, not that I know of
The NRA is the only org. I know that's pro-gun rights. Many anti-gun. And lots of organizations that fall into the large, ambiguous middle zone.

7. Human Rights Campaign
Whitman-Walker Clinic. Disabled American Vets.

That's all. Nothing else. (Unless you count clothing donations to Goodwill and Purple Heart.)

I'm too broke to be giving to every cause I think is worthy. So I pick my battles and my charities carefully.

8. Good stuff so far! And here's another question:
As you can see, I give to a lot, but many of them get little: maybe $20-25, so I'm not throwing loads of cash anywhere. If I were rich, I'd love to set up a foundation to give money away, but alas, I'm about a 999,000 bucks short of being a millionaire. Close, but no cigar. Those are all causes I believe in, but I can't support them to the extent I'd like.

So: is it better to give more $$ to a few charities, or less to many? I'd love to give $250 a year to ACLU, but that would mean cutting out everything that's not church, and then I'd feel bad for cutting out the others. I could do rotation, but then, for instance, BAM gets money only once a decade, and what's the difference then?

How do you all deal with this?

12. When I could afford to both eat and donate, my recipients were
Disabled American Veterans
Vietnam Veterans of America
Special Olympics
Greenpeace

Now that I can barely afford to eat, and thus have zero charitable dollars... I donate old clothes and books to Goodwill.

But I'm running out of clothes and books..

Come on economy... I have good work to do!!!

13. Oh, don't worry - wealth will soon be trickling down upon us
and we'll all be rich and every organization will all have all the faith-based tax money it needs so they won't be required to seek donations any more.

Ah, what a beautiful world the repukes are giving us. Hard to believe I ever voted Democrat.

Missouri Public Interest Research Group
St. Louis Zoo
Forest Park Forever
St. Louis Art Museum
Lauemier Sculpture Park

I also try to seek out musicicans who have health care needs and help pay for their medical expenses. I have several friends in the local music scene that have organized an effort to support destitute musicians. It is so sad how many great musicians are living in total poverty.

25. ATTAK...
and - apart from this - organizations who support legal and illegal immigrants. And the Church, but I still think about leaving (the church) and using this money for better purposes. In Germany, you're automatically a member of the church, if you were baptized as a child and pay church-tax (lot's of money).
Greetings from Germany,
Dirk
