Weird movie double standards..this time with "Day After Tomorrow"
Some people say the movie has bad science...but I had to sit and listen to people talk about "The Passion" as if that shit really happened.

When Oliver Stone made "JFK" he was lambasted over ANY inaccuraccy. He was certainly more scrutinized than Bush was about his tax policy. When Stone made "Nixon" he continued the lie that Nixon didn't contest the 1960 election yet there were no columns devoted to that mistake.

"The Day After Tomorrow" is a disaster movie.
It isn't really about global warming, per se, it is about the arrogance of power and the myopia of our society. That is why the homeless guy ends up surviving with the rich kid. Everyone's homeless now, boss! Disaster movies are about how humans survive things. Bad science? Space ships have been running out of fuel in space and stopping for generations and no one bitches about that. Reagan thought trees and cows were the major sources of pollution. Bush thinks the world was created by a god in six days. "Peter Pan" was bad science but it was also a good story about a mother's love.

anyway, go see it, but don't expect too much.

It is "The Passion" for Greens.

1. It's from the same director as Independence day...
And the science realy sucked in that movie but i enjoyed it anyway. It's entertainment, not a documentary.

3. There is no way
that the science could be as bad in this movie as it was in "Independence Day" and that director doesn't write what he shoots anyway. He is about as close to an auteur as a commercial director.

I would still like the "upload virus" macro for my Powerbook, though.

5. Yeah SPOILERS

I saw it this afternoon and I thought it was OK. I happened to love about every actor in the movie so that helped. If they had only spent more time on the actual possible science of it happening. These days CGI rules. They started up within the first minute and didn't stop. Where's the suspense?? And if I ever win a 300 million dollar lottery I would love to make a disaster movie that didn't include the following

Father estranged from son, saves son and realizes what's really important in life

Mother self-sacrificing to almost death

Best buddy dies

Someone in power totally disagrees with scientist

Wolves????

Actually, the only thing that really bothered me about the movie other than it being a Disaster 101 movie, were the damn wolves. CGI wolves at that.

Jake is sure cute though, isn't he? Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal as father and son. I want more of that!

I digress. Good movie. Worth the matinee price.

2. My RW brother just told me it was "concocted."
I told him it was a MOVIE and OF COURSE it was concocted. He just mumbled some nonsensical stuff and kept him opinion that it was "bad."

He thinks Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, etc. should be tried for treason and he is just a big collection of GOP talking points.

It's so sad.

9. The get it right from the daily mainstream media load.
I know people like that. They say the most absurd things sometimes. Stuff that like 10 seconds of minimal common sense thought would change their minds(and often do once you point it out).

4. And Volcano, Earthquake, Armageddon, Twister...
were all perfectly accurate and scientific movies right? Why weren't these similarly themed movies given the same kind of criticizm and scrutiny that Day After Tomorrow is being given? Yes, a total double standard. Even NPR had a scientist review this movie to say how factually innacurate it was, instead of telling us how entertaining it was.

6. Yeah, that's funny, isn't it?
How the movie is not so much being reviewed, as being debunked because every movie critic now is a climatologist, too. Much being made of the "this is not real science, folks, so don't believe a word of it" instead of reviewing the story. The people that don't want anyone to pay attention to the message or gist of the story are making everyone more curious by coming out and saying that we shouldn't pay any attention to it because it's "bad science".
