What I like about the South

Having just returned from a vacation in N. Carolina I want to say that I really like:

1. The hot weather...even humid hot...I love it!! call me a fool but I love it.
2. The food... the fact that I can't fit into my shorts as well is a testament to southern cooking...
3. The Gardening!!!...what wonderful flowers they can grow there that I can't!...to be able to grow jasmine...I envy them!!!
4. The southern architecture... I drool over those double porches!
5. ...and of course the nice people we met! In fact we met a couple from Lynchburg VA and they told us it was the home of "Jerry Falwell..but not to hold it against them"...hee hee... I liked them right away.
6. Southern beaches have nice warm water...

1. I was just down south last weekend.

My brother and his family live in Greenville, NC, where my brother is a chemistry professor. (Any ECU students here?) I got a slow leak in my tire, so I brought it into the shop to get fixed. It was this great old place, in business since the 50's, and it even had the requisite three old men (two white, one black) sitting out front talking.

It took them about two minutes to fix the tire, and the charge was $7.50. I told the man behind the counter (who, incidentally, was one of the three old men from out front) that this was a real bargain. He said in his southern drawl "I bet that would cost you about $12 up in Washington." I told him I thought it would probably cost $50 up in Washingtin, and we both had a good laugh. Then he told me how happy he was to have my business, he asked me to "come on back" next time I visited if I needed my car fixed, and he said he hopes I have a good time on my visit to NC.

As I left, I thought to myself that there may be truth to the story that people really are nicer in the South.

4. we had something like that happen and the guy fixed the tire

with this kit and charged us even less.. $2...no joke...my husband gave him a $10 tip for helping us out!

2. okay, you're a fool

I could never live in the south. I hate hot, humid weather. That's why I like the Northeast, you get all the seasons and if you want, it's just a hop, skip and a jump to Canada.

I love winter. :)

3. oh winter isn't that bad...but in PA

the growing season isn't long enough for me... I want my cake and I wanna eat it too!!!!

5. The weather is also the main thing that would keep me from

living in the South, I absolutely HATE heat and humidity and like winter. But I sure wouldn't mind visiting or vacationing there one of these days, especially Atlanta, Virginia, or North Carolina. And as the daughter of two English teachers, I can say that some of the best American literature has come from the South (and no, I don't mean Gone With the Wind, lol)!

6. you can't beat the cooking

Can't say I am a fan of the climate, but I did my best in the many many years I grew up and lived in the region. I do like watching the fireflies in the evening shadows, and listening to the bullfrogs growl.

There is lots of natural beauty, laid-back living, and good people. But I live for the cuisine! I owe my Tennessee heritage lots of gratitude for its influence on my palate and cooking ability, lol. :-)
