What network news did your family watch? Do you still watch the same one?
For us it was NBC Nightly News with John Chancellor. I never saw a Cronkite newscast and ABC just seemed to be weird with two people-and this was in the day (70's) when ABC ruled primetime.

Now I watch ABC. I don't know why I started but it seems to me that it is by far the most down the middle.

I have a theory that the only people who still watch CBS are old people (from the Cornkite days) and people whose TV only gets CBS clearly (everywhere I have lived the CBS signal has been very strong).

So how about you?

2. I'm CBS born and bred
It's the only thing we watched in our household. Now I'm mostly a C-SPAN and CNN (BLAHHHHH) person, but in the event of a disaster I turn back to Dan Rather.

Your theory may be right... Mom was/is a big fan of Cronkite. I watch either CBS or ABC.

For aggravation I watch CNN or MSNBC.

7. We watched CBS throughout the 1960s and 1970s, then switched to NBC
after Cronkite left. In the 1980s, I watched McNeill/Lehrer. In the 1990s, I stopped watching TV news altogether. In the 2000s, I watched Aaron Brown from 2001 until the Iraq war. Now, once again, I don't watch TV news.

8. Watched Huntley and Brinkley as a youngster
because that's what my dad watched. He still watches NBC, and I still like CBS, as I did watch Walter Cronkite when I got a TV of my own later on. And even on a local level, Fox really sucks. At least here it does.

9. Local network news, mostly..
KDKA (Pittsburgh's CBS affiliate) was a big one as well as WTAE (ABC). As far as national network news outlets, I remember ABC World News Tonight the most from when I was little.

my dad was a news junky, so we switched from Cronkite and Huntley-Brinkley and back again a lot.

I rarely watch network news today, but when i do, it's CBS.

12. Just like you...
We watched NBC when I was a child, but now my family watches ABC. Our main reason is the local NBC affiliate gets poor reception here.

Edited on Mon May-24-04 10:58 AM by underpants
Channel 6 (The South's first Televison station) is so strong that on cable it is channel 9. There was a double image (ghosts) because the TV picked up two signals.

15. Remember when....
Douglas Edwards was on for only 15 minutes! For some crazy reason I really liked Edward R. Murrow. I still remember the "Person to Person" piece about Jayne Mansfield and her heart-shaped pool! I really don't like Tom Browkaw. He always sounds like he's ready to take a breath but wants to get his sentences out before he takes another deep breath! After Dan Rather, we watch the Newshour on PBS.

17. CBS
One of my earliest memories was during a CBS Nightly News with Walter Cronkite.

My mother had to run into the kitchen and left me in front of the TV watching the news. Cronkite then intro'd a story in which 'parental advisory is suggested', but since I was the only one in the room I went ahead and watched it (I was about 3).

It was a report about the Vietnam war and showed horrible pictures of vietnamese children in pain and terror.

Probably why I'm so anti-war today!

22. NBC: Huntley & Brinkley
And I fondly remember their Convention coverage--back when things actually happened at conventions.

Now, I usually watch CBS when I get home early enough. Used to have the local NBC station on during the morning--mostly for the weather--but they turned hard-right after 9/11. So I switched to CBS, AM & PM.

23. I only started because ...
I had to read about how bad/good it was. It is all about the same, you can't do much in 22mins. Years ago Dan Rather said that they would love a 1 hour program, but the affiliates love their sandwich. Action News at 5:30(CBS)Action News at 6:00).

Cable news??? has such a pathetic little rating as to be without notice.

I looked this up. Huntley_Brinkly had about 20 million viewers between 1956 and 1970. It was only 15 mins. until 1962.

I can only guess what ABC /CBS had then. I wasn't able to find out.
I would guess that the 3 networks had about 70% of TV people in 1973.
Over all I would say that TV news was good or OK between 1965 and 1975.
after that it declined.

What do you remember? I can still remember The H-B predecessor.

The Camel calvacade of News, with John Cameron Swasey. 15 mins of not much.
"Camels always taste good". that was the sponsor and creator of not much.

Then we'd watch WDAY (ABC) local news at 6.

I don't know what the local news my parents watch is currently, but it's still CBS for the national broadcast. They also watch CBC's national news on satellite TV every night.

I prefer the local ABC station (but can't clearly explain why). But I grew up (I'm 44 now) watching 60 Minutes on Sunday with my parents and I still to this day watch it religiously.

and, on occasion, "The Huntley-Brinkley Report". I still watch the network news with Dan Rather.

I've worked with both print and broadcast journalists, and the ones from CBS were always my favorites. If Edward R. Murrow was still alive, he'd be proud.

(A :toast: to the CBS News Washington Bureau.)

29. In the 1970s and '80s my family always watched ...
NBC news with John Chancellor and then Tom Brokaw. It was probably because, in our media market – Sacramento – the NBC affiliate, KCRA Channel 3, was by far and away the highest-rated and most-popular local news. NBC has always been No. 1 in Sac.

My parents' television-viewing is so fragmented now, what with all the cable channels, and I've convinced them that all network news is Republican propaganda, so they don't watch it as religiously. But, out of habit, my parents still go to NBC first, with ABC/Peter Jennings a close second. They might even go to ABC first some days.

We've never been a CBS news-viewing family. I've never been attracted to their news broadcast. It's that NBC dominance around here.

These days, I watch zero network or cable news – haven't since Selection 2000, when all news outfits decided to cover for Bush and ignore the stolen election. If I HAD to watch a network news telecast, I'd go for ABC. While I might also watch NBC to some extent, the GE network and Brokaw have done a little too much whoring for me to feel good about loyally watching them.

32. Miami was an AFL town, so I watched Huntley and Brinkley
I was in elementary school in the late '60s, just old enough to follow the '68 election, Vietnam and the Apollo missions. This may seem like a bizarre reason, but I was loyal to the NBC affiliate in Miami, Channel 7, since NBC carried the AFL football games and our upstart, expansion Dolphins.

There was an NFL doubleheader every week on CBS and an AFL doubleheader on NBC. The stuffy CBS announcers barely mentioned the AFL games or scores prior to the merger in 1970. So for everything important I turned the big Florida room TV to NBC. We already had a remote, first in the neighborhood.

David Brinkley had the most awesome voice and delivery, so distinct. More than a decade later I began watching CBS because Dan Rather was so impressive standing up to Richard Nixon, who clearly despised him. Rather's real-world portrayal of the JFK assassination about 10 years ago was also extremely welcome, along with Peter Jennings' recent version.

To this day, my dad can't tell one network from another. FOX excluded, of course.
