Sausage Attack Overshadows Brewers' Win
July 10, 2003 03:49 AM EDT

The Italian sausage was a hit with Randall Simon.

In a bizarre scene during the popular sausage race at Miller Park, the Pittsburgh first baseman took his bat and delivered a two-handed chop that knocked over a woman dressed in costume Wednesday night.

Simon was booked for misdemeanor battery and released after the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pirates 2-1 in 12 innings. He will meet with the district attorney's office Thursday, and it will be up to prosecutors to determine whether formal charges are filed.

"It was very strange," Pirates outfielder Reggie Sanders said.

The race is a fan favorite at Miller Park. Held between the sixth and seventh innings, people dress up as a bratwurst, hot dog, Polish sausage and Italian sausage and run around the field.

As the group went past Pirates' third-base dugout, Simon reached over a railing and hit the Italian sausage character from behind, causing the 20-year-old woman wearing the outfit to tumble. When she fell, the woman portraying the hot dog also went down.

"They both were treated at the scene for scraped knees, but at this point I don't think they have any other complaints," she said.

6. No one and I mean no one messes with the sausage race.
I think Simon was paid by the bratwurst to take the sausage and hot dog out. Most likely the work of the Wurst crime syndicate. People all over the state of Wisconsin are outraged and I for one will not stand for it. </sarcasm

I even heard about this on WPR this morning - as close as they ever get to covering sports. What the heck was the matter with Simon, anyway - too many of those nasty muscle building hormones racing through his veins? It was just a bit of harmless fun that goes on at most Brewer games. At the very least I think it is safe to say the man is a jerk and I hope he gets the book thrown at him. I don't take my kids to a baseball game to watch that kind of pettiness. I don't care what players do off the field. I don't buy into the hero worship that goes on. But on the field I expect the best behavior at every game. The same kind of behavior I expect from my own children.

9. Someday every one of these "sports hero" criminals will be in jail
And America can return to a more interesting, educated state of being that doesn't waste tens of millions of trees every year printing *@(&%(#&% sports scores, and wasting tons and tons of silver on (*@^%*^# sports photos, and wasting millions of hours of s(@$*%^ sports chatter at work and in the media.

I'm waiting for the day when we really WILL have "Summarize Proust" competitions, and live novel writing, and plays on TV... sigh . . .
