who is the worst actor in movies who is well respected?
In your view who is the worst actor working in movies today who, nonetheless, is well respected by the industry and considered by it a good actor?

My choice is Sir Anthony Hopkins, maybe at one time but of late I think he has just been slumming it in the movies.

3. Heston got his Oscar in 1960 for Ben-Hur
over James Stewart in the great "Anatomy of a Murder" and Jack Lemmon's sensational performance in "Some Like it Hot"!! something is wrong with the system. Cary Grant wasn't even nominated for "North by Northwest".

2. Tom Cruise.....
I don't see how he gets any acclaim, let alone popularity. He couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.

I still like Anthony Hopkins, but I think he's chosen some bad movies over the past couple of years.

4. I agree about Hopkins
but my god, he was absolutely terrifying in "Silence of the Lambs," and in "Remains of the Day" he broke not only Emma Thompson's heart but mine as well. I don't have to see his latest movies; I've heard they're dogs. I'll always respect his talent.

actor. You are right about Remains of the Day. Great performance. I haven't seen him in anything lately though.

22. Tom Cruise is an average actor
Who has a talent for choosing great material.

Look at what he's been in lately. Minority Report, Last Samurai, Vanilla Sky, Jerry McGuire. I liked these movies. Heck, I even liked both Mission: Impossibles and Eyes Wide Shut.

This guys simply cannot act. He is flat out awful.

I disagree strongly about Clint Eastwood. See the Unforgiven, he's really pretty darn good as an actor.

Okay, he can act. But he can only ploay one role. So in that sense, I think he's pretty mediocre.

10. I wouldn't say that.
Check out "Author, Author", and "The Devils Advocate"

Two extremely different and well acted roles by Al. Unfortunately in both he was surrounded by mediocre costars, and both movies were box office disappointments.

check out "frankie & johnny" (1991) - different role for him & he pulled it off... actually it's a pretty good flick - a rom com, but not the sticky sweet kind that makes you want to :puke:

8. Julia Roberts (using the unisex definition of "actor")
I simply do not see the alleged talent. It's been the same character since "Mystic Pizza". Toothy grin, big bark of a laugh, startled yips.

No matter the part, she's "playing" the same character. (Or as a director once said, "You're not acting, you're playing at acting.")

I have never understood what makes people think she is

a)attractive
b) in possession of talent

"Pretty Woman" originally was supposed to star Ellen Barkin and be crushingly dark. I think the story was that the millionaire doesn't come back and she turns to smack. Ellen passed on it (or while she was deciding) *POOF* in steps Garry Marshall with a rewrite and Julia is made a STAR!!!!!

Nothing against her personally she seems pretty cool but she is a creation of Hollywood.

16. I saw this Tom Cruise movie once where he is this selfabsorbed a-hole
who meets this girl and she teaches him to love and to love his real self but he screws it up and they break up until he has a miraculous epiphany in which he learns to see the real world and what really matters and he rushes back to her and they fall in love.

But I can't remember the title. Anyone know which movie I am talking about?

21. Maybe they could make a movie together
of course they would have to sit in chairs at opposite sides of the room and not move. Any movement and counter movement might create and whitelight and whitenoise that would create a Sunami that drowns Hollywood.

Tom: Hi I'm an a-hole
Julia:Hi I'm downtrodden but I have dreams
(awkward pause)
Tom AND Julia: LINE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

19. Deniro in everything since Casino.
What a streak of horrible, horrible movies. You could forgive the occasional cash-in if it were occasional (the great Cusack does have ConAir and Runaway Jury in his closet, after all), but Bobby D's not even trying anymore. Everytime I see the 45th comic variation on his Travis Bickleness, Meet the Parents, Showtime, Rocky/Bullwinkle, etc, all I can picture is Bela Lugosi in that Sid Caesar skit in "Ed Wood."

Oh, and Affleck. Enough already. He's horrible.

Michael Douglas should never have gotten an Oscar--if it hadn't been the awful Eighties, he'd have never been nominated; he benefitted from the complete lack of competition that was 1987 (88?). Black Rain, Basic Instict, a remake (!!!) of the In-Laws?! Pleeeze.

As to WI-DEM, yeah, Hopkins has been running on fumes for years. After all, his follow-up to the great "Silence" was...?

"Freejack."

I would, on the other hand, credit John Cusack, Johnny Depp, Tim Robbins, George Clooney, and to a lesser extent Kevin Spacey, for choosing projects for their aesthetic merits versus their box office potential. Not that they don't take a rent-payer every once in a while, or make some well-intentioned-but-still-horrible films, but at least they're not JUST out for a buck.

23. Too many to name
John Travolta
Keanu Reeves
Nicholas Cage
Demi Moore
Bruce Willis

and all the ones mentioned above

They do one decent flick every decade and then they are cast in 15 bombs

Sorry, I just can't understand why he is celebrated as one of the best actors of our time.

If you'd like to convince me otherwise, I'll keep an open mind. But everything I've seen him in has left me with the impression that he studied method acting at the Georgia-Pacific Institute for Cardboard Thespians.

IMHO, "Being Christopher Walken" would have been a far, far funnier movie!

Always looked baffled even when he was killing someone...

Vastly over rated performer, wooden, trite, amateurish...whenever a bad actor looms on the screen to this day, reviewers deploy the euphemism "Gary Cooper-esque".
