What is the fastest speed you have ever driven?

Conventional U.S. roads only - the Autobahn, racetracks, dragstrips don't count!

Me - 132 m.p.h. - Nevada - in a 396/425 STOCK Chevy Caprice.

12. Hee, hee

I had a '62 Chevy bored .030 over, balanced and blueprinted that I probably did around 150 or so in, but the speedo got "temporarily" disconnected in favor of a Mickey Thompson steering column mounted tach, so I can't count use it for this thread.

:-) I have to approximate the speed because the speedo only went to 85. However, when I let off the gas, the needle stayed at 85 for a little bit.

Oh, what made me slow down? One of the tires came apart. Damned bias-ply tires! :P

I was visiting relatives about 3 years ago and anyone who's ever driven I-80 across the country knows how dead, strait, and flat it can be in Nebraska. I wasn't even trying to drive this fast. All of the sudden, I looked down, and there I was at 100. Felt like 75 or 80 on the stretch of road.

20. I did 95 in a mercury Montego
back in my early twenties. That's like the equivalent of 400mph in Schumacher's Ferrari!

I had a Honda prelude from the early eighties. I don't know how fast I got that going. I think the Odometer only went to 80( maybe 90), but I pegged it. My thought was that if my tire blew out, I'd be all over the trees beside the road.

One day I lost it and rolled that honda in a ditch. Wasn't going land-speed fast, but too fast for the curve on a very cold day. Spilled coffee all over myself.

I drive sanely now.

25. I hit just shy of 130 in a 1987 Toyota FX-16.
Was racing my ex -- he was in an '85 MR2. I told him mine would go faster, but he didn't believe me. I was right. This would have been around 1990, when the FX was still a baby -- had about 70k miles on it. Both had 140 mph speedometers. We both chickened out pretty quickly, though -- that's the only reason he didn't get the MR up that high. We were on Route 52 along the Ohio River, just off I-275 ... it was right after dark on a summer night. I was about 27 years old, and thought I owned the world.

I had my MX-3 GS up to about 95 once a couple of years ago, after a lot of expensive engine work. I'm glad I got to push the pedal to the floor just once, since some jackass rear-ended me and totaled it out at a stoplight about six months later. I would joyfully have throttled him with my bare hands if I'd known the crap his insurance company would put us through to pay us what the car was worth.

Mostly, I don't speed. Now, I'm driving a RAV4, so the point's moot -- it probably would hit 100, but it wouldn't be much fun.

I had tickets for the last Bison/Sioux football game in Grand Forks, so I set my alarm for 8am the previous night, so I could get to GF early. Problem was that I forgot to turn the alarm on (uh-ohhhh...).

Woke up at 12:54 pm, kickoff was in 6 minutes. Swore at myself like crazy and high-tailed it to GF in time for halftime.

Luckily, I wasn't pulled over.

In my current car - a (then) bone stock '01 Jetta Wolfsburg 1.8T - on a beautiful, brand-new, smooth-as-glass, deserted, asphalt highway in western South Dakota. With my wife in the car.

Let me tell ya - 135 mph is very fast, even on a deserted highway.

The scary thing is that the 135 mph was before all of the mods I've made to the car since then. It's supposedly capable of around 149 mph now, but I haven't bothered trying.

Edit: on the trip noted above, I drove 2265 miles in 6 days. I wouldn't recommend it, however!

54. I went off the road doing over 110 in a '65 Mustang once.
We were racing down a four lane road in the middle of the night. I was over 110 and the front right wheel went off the side of the road. I lost control of the car as it went across the median through a stand of trees and into the oncoming lanes, back across into our original lane, back again into the oncoming lanes and then back to the original lane before getting control. We went through several stands of trees without hitting a single tree. The oncoming traffic was stopped at a light down the way. By some incredible stroke of luck, we did not have one scratch on the car or ourselves. When we finally got the car to stop my buddy and I looked at each other and said never again. That was the last of my street racing days.

I went on a road trip with my sister to Florida, and she was annoyed that I was driving so slow (85mph), so I figured I'd show her how fast my car could go. Since we were driving throught the mountains in Kentucky at the time, I didn't really want to take it too much faster than that.

64. I think around 115
in my 1970 Porsche 914 on a back road in southern Wisconsin. Someone else was pacing me and said we hit that mark before I slowed down due to high speed wobbling.

That thing moved for a flat four 2 liter, then again there wasn't alot of car around it. Sadly it blew up on I-94 a year later.

In the early 70s Plymouth 440's were our patrol cars. They were very fast and very dangerous, didn't handle at all.

72. What an understatement

How about the 440 6-packs with tri-power? It was all you could do to keep 'em in a straight line, as long as the linkage didn't fall off. :)

I get a kick out of these new Hemi commercials as well - remember the original?

"So what are you doing this weekend?"

"Adjusting the timing on the Hemi." :)

77. I've still got a 69 Coronet 440 RT
Last time i went through the lights at Wall Raceway it turned a 12.25 118mph on its front tires. It dropped the drive shaft and threw the ass end of the car about 3ft in the air, that made for an interesting finish.

70. '67 Turbo -Jet

I think the 396/425 HP option (which this one had) was not seen in too many non-Vettes that year, but for some reason this one had it. It was just a good 'ol buy it off the lot tan (with dark brown vinyl top) Chevy that my dad bought used from a mechanic friend after my Ford van jumped the timing belt right before I was to go back to college.

I think the "base motor" 396 that year was 375 HP - I'll have to check.

74. Heh, I had some idiot in a Lincoln Navigator try to race me on the NY
State Parkway or Thruway. I let him build up speed next to me until his engine governor kicked in and held him at 90, then proceed to 130 for the next five or six miles. Completely lost sight of the fool.

73. I gladly accepted the ticket for doing 90mph.
In a rent-a-car doing over 100mph on my way to San Antonio. Mom in the passenger seat. Ex-husband and sister in the back seat. I heard the siren and see the lights in my rear-view mirror (I knew it was a speed trap). Mom, says, "Tell him I had to pee!"....LOL The officer comes up to the car and asked me to get out of the car. He took me to the side of the road. Then ask me, "Do you know how fast I clocked you going?" (Knowing to never admit) I say, "No!" The officer says, "I clocked you doing 90mph". I say, "Oh! OK!". He wrote me the ticket. I sent the money in. That was the only speeding ticket that I have ever received. (Speed Queen...doing it every chance I get in the car).

79. Did 90 on I-90 once
Unfortunately, I don't have my license yet and thus have to drive with an adult riding shotgun. I was coming home from Grandma's and everybody was doing 85+, so I "reluctantly" told my dad I'd have to keep up with traffic.

I didn't get much thrill out of it. I guess the real thrill of driving fast comes when other people are driving much, much, much slower than you.
