Whats the story behind your DU name?
Until recently, I was a left-of-center guy who actually trusted GW Bush after 9/11. Then I got my eyes opened up by some friends, DU, and some other places. Boy, was I naive.

7. I used to have a pet python named Duke...
over time, I called him Dookus.

When I first got on the internet (using an early version of AOL in '91) I was sitting next to his cage. They asked for a name. I looked around. Dookus it was.

8. Rainbow

My first online nick, waaaaaaay back in 1984, was Rainbow Warrior. I was paying homage to the sinking of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior by he French. I signed all the messages I posted back then with RoyGBiv.

I've held on to various versions of this over the years, but there have been many systems I've used that only allowed one-word nicks, and I thought RainbowWarrior looked funny. So, I just took my sig as my nick.

Voila'.

That may not be an exact quotation from The Matrix, but I found it the perfect description of 'the sheeple', as some people on DU call the hopelessly uninformed masses.

13. My apricot poodle was next to me when I registered at DU
His name is Awsi. As a young kid I called a dog a dooger and my parents made a big deal out of it, so it stuck.

Confession: somehow I stuck an "e" on the end of Awsi and didn't notice until after I registered. So I screwed up at DU before my very first post.

17. I'll try to do that
Pathetic that my job involves computers but I don't have a scanner and know zilch about posting pictures.

I have plenty of pictures of Awsi, young and old (he's 14 1/2), but they are from a conventional camera, not digital. Perhaps I can find a friend with a scanner to help.

No chance I'll forfeit this screen name.:)

16. Just really random...
I was trying to come up with a decent SN for Battlefield: 1942 a while back (Doomhammer just wasn't working out for me), so I typed the first thing that popped into my head. I'm not exactly sure what made me think of it, maybe because it's what my grandmother named her cat, I don't know...but it's what I've been using as my handle on a number of sites lately.

18. I was stumped.
While cruising a old economics textbook I found a picture of a lady holding one of those big checks from when you win the lottery. Her last name is now my nick.

She won $69,023,054 on Nov 25 , 95. The picture can be found on page 551 of the book Economics Principles and Tools. 1998.

I was drunk..

21. the story
Edited on Tue May-18-04 06:24 AM by SarahBelle
My dad used to call me this when I was little and he was the force behind my interest in politics, so I used it. Sounded kind of feminine too, which I suppose I am (and darn happy about that for me personally). :7
For those who don't know, up until March, I spent over a year on DU as "populistmom" but I got sick of people thinking I was old because of it (well, older than I was anyway), I went through a lot of changes in my life (though not quite enough, but I digress), and I just wanted to use my first name because, well, I like it.

:D

22. Skittles is a 25 pound solid black bundle of feline love
a coworker of my boyfriend brought a starving, injured kitty to work - I named him Skittles after the candy. He weighted 7 pounds and one leg was dislocated so badly you could see bone. Vet put a pin in his leg and he wore a cast for weeks.

I thought Skittles was a metaphor for the way I felt when I joined the DU - starved for the truth and injured by what had happened in election 2000. I was looking for help the way I helped Skitbit.

24. LOL
we don't know why Skittles is so big - he did initially stuff his face but now he eats normally. Perhaps he was just meant to be a big cat - he's got big paws. Good lord is that a REAL cat in the picture? Skittles is not THAT big !!!

We laugh about Skittles being "high maintenance" - his latest mishap is some sort of bite in the side - (he's one of four farm cats, all fixed and super spoiled). The vet treated him and wrapped him in that stuff they wrap on your arm when you donate blood - the vet commented he was using "a lot of wrap". :o

28. The registration page rejected me.
Several times. I was trying to register as LoneWolf. There was no Lone Wolf at that point. I finally gave up and deleted the "one" and it worked. Later on, someone successfully registered as lone_wolf, or something like that; not that it matters.

Lone Wolf because I am. A lone liberal in the midst of freeper alley; a fiercely independent thinker who just can't follow the pack; an introvert who must have daily "alone" time to be at her best.

A Lone Wolf, following my own trail.

29. It's from a book...

"When Farmer Oak smiled, the corners of his mouth spread till they were within an unimportant distance of his ears, his eyes were reduced to chinks, and diverging wrinkles appeared round them, extending upon his countenance like the rays in a rudimentary sketch of the rising sun."

Far From the Madding Crowd, by Thomas Hardy

It's about hope. And perseverance. Things will get better. They can't get much worse.
