1. Well, considering the Bible condems usury, I would say that
the credit card companies are way out of line. I got into a program that eliminates credit card debt without bankruptcy, no payments, and a good credit rating at the end of it. It takes 6-12 months to do and a lot of fighting the credit card companies which, like all good republicans, have to use for the law.

Another interesting thing - in most states, if not all, if you charge more than 10% you're guilty of usury and go to jail. But since the credit card companies have congress in their employ, they get to charge what every thing want. Must be nice.

7. My spam filter
puts them in Bulk Mail. I've often thought of writing and saying that, as a Muslim, I wasn't interested, but I figured it would just get me more spam, so I didn't.

9. This is actually where a great deal of hatred of the Jews came from
Also the conspiracy about them controling the world banks. See the NT has a couple references to not loning anything to anybody (in fact it seems to favor giving stuff away). And if you do loan to people you are supposed to forgive them their debts and wipe the board clean after about 7 years.

Enter the Jews. Due to other social factors they were the one religion that seemed to be able to survive within Christian dominated society (our calendars are full of refs to religions wiped out). The Jews did not have the restrictions on loaning or profitting from it. Thus they would often find themself in the roll of backer for others in need. But of course they would want their money back with some interest. Thus greed and cheapness became associated with the Jews and fertile ground for global conspiracy was laid down.

11. Az, you are mostly correct...there are prohibitions against
usury in the Torah. Jews are not permitted charge interest when lending money to Jews.

Also, the primary reason Jews got into moneylending (for which they were persecuted) was because the Catholic church had prohibitions against Christians lending money for interest.

Jews were prohibited by the Church from owning land. Therefore, since they could not own land they could not be farmers. Thus many of them became small business owners.

Since the church needed money and Christians could not charge interest AND they saw the Jews as beyond salvation, it was the one occupation Jews could engage in that was not barred to them on account of their religion. Also, given the Jewish reverence for studying Torah and Talmud, Jews were often the only literate people outside of the local church leaders.

Trust me if the Catholic Church had not disapproved of charging interest for lending money, Jews would not have been allowed to do it way back when. It would have been one in a long list of occupations barred to Jews by the ruling Catholic Church.
