3. Have you been there?
It is very odd and very cool. It has been many years since I have seen it and think I should perhaps take a day trip over there this summer to see it again.

4. I'm not sure
I haven't lived in Kansas for ten years & back in my 20's when I might have been there, for some reason I don't remember going. That doesn't mean I haven't been there.
I have been to the church in Stull though....

5. So, the church in Stull huh?
That church has SOME reputation as well as the graveyard nearby. I drove through Stull yesterday as a matter of fact and I always get a strange chill going through there. Perhaps if you stay here you don't lose the memories as quickly, I wish I could forget my night in that cemetary about 1970. It was the ultimate high school challenge. Love the web sites, I am going to keep those.

I have to go but I will check back. Were you a KU student perhaps?

6. KU, yes
lived in Lawrence for 5 years.
Sounds like you might know the scene I remember. I actually have real strong memories of Kansas. I was kind of making a joke about not remembering the Garden of Eden related to some of my other activities at the time.
Also lived in Manhattan for about 20, where I went to junior high and high school and a little bit at K-State, but I got my degree at KU.

9. I thought you were refering
to Stull where you tend to forget the experience because of the witchcraft! I live in Topeka, have always lived in Topeka. I love Lawrence, spend as much time there as I can and I have a son at KState right now so yes, I am familiar with the area. When were you at KU? Have you read the book "Cows Are Freaky When They Look At You: an oral history of the Kaw Valley Hemp Pickers"? It certainly sounds like it relates to your activities at the time, LOL.

7. Absolutely not...
...Kansas is also home of Marysville, the "black squirrel capital of the world"

"Marysville, KS, bills itself as Home of the Black Squirrels and it deserves to. The town has named the black squirrel its official mascot, and holds an annual Black Squirrel Celebration. In 1987, the "Black Squirrel Song" became Marysville's official anthem:

"Lives in the city park,
runs all over town
The coal black squirrel will be our pride and joy
Many more years to come!"

10. Funny
many people do tend to tease about Kansas but I love it. I was thinking about posting about it a few weeks ago after a short, springtime road trip but I never got around to it. Kansas can be really awesome. I did not know about the Black Squirrels. We do have some interesting flying squirrels in Wakarusa, I don't know if I can find a reference but it kept the county from building a road through my woods.

11. Well, just so ya understand...
...I come from a very, very small town in Massachusetts (but moved to California when I was 16)...

so...

I'm not teasing anyone. I genuinely, legitimately love this stuff. The "Roadside America" web site is full of wild, wonderful stuff from the days when the U.S.A. wasn't pre-fab and franchised. You can click on a map of the U.S. and search the oddities by state. That, to me, is what the U.S.A. is all about..."character"..."individuality"...

So I'm not laughing AT anyone...I'm laughing WITH 'em. Kansas, I salute you. Really.

12. I got it
and just in case you misunderstood me, I was joking in my first post. I too love the oddities in each state although it seems that more and more of them are getting pushed aside in order to homogenize us all. Actually I am very glad you chose to do this because I have now bookmarked a lot of very interesting sites. Thank you. :toast:
