CONFESS!!!!!! What's your "Brain Candy"
Now I think I've become a pretty darn good expert on the type of folks that post regularly here on DU. I think I've met more of you folks in person and I haven't met a dumb cookie in the lot of you.

We like the op-ed section of the NY Times, the Pol-Sci section of our favorite indepenant bookstore. We watch "Meet the Press" and curse out Tim Russert. We are very smart folks!

But let's face it: We all have our own form of 'Brain Candy'. My bookshelf may be lined with the NYTimes non-fiction bestsellers from the past 3 years (all progressive books), but every once in awhile I like to watch a TV show that should insult my intelligence. I love Survivor and I also watch Real World & Road Rules (and all the off-shoots). These are my brain candies, I can enjoy them without having to put alot of thought into the content.

So CONFESS!!! What is your 'Brain Candy'??? Is it a show, a type of music or a genre of movies? Let us know what your secret 'Brain Candy' is!!

9. Ahh, great question!
Books: The Destroyer Series created by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir about the super-secret organization CURE under direct service of the President of the US. The agents of CURE, all three of them (Smith, Remo, and Chuin) are assassins charged with protecting democracy by operating outside that democracy. The are almost universally witty and often laugh-out-loud funny, especially the bits with Remo and Chuin.

Music: I am super picky, so all of my music is brain candy. Right now I am listening to The Who's Quadrophenia.

Movies: Reptilicus, Sydney Pink's attrocious giant lizard in Copenhagen movie.

Magazines: used to be Macworld, but Macworld started to suck. Now I don't read any periodicals.

TV: The Adult Swim block on cartoon network

10. Gimme cheese
I love horribly bad sci fi films. Also some bad horror films. "Van Helsing" sounds promising due to its terrible writing, bad acting, and Kate Beckinsale in a corset.

Occasionally my wife and I watch "Elimidate" before retiring. I don't watch much TV but have gotten hooked on "Deadwood" on HBO and have been a fan of "Six Feet Under" since its debut.

And I bounce around on freerepublic.com; I used to be horrified by those people, now I just see them as rich sources of very very sick humor. John Waters couldn't make these characters up.

20. Professional Wrestling
I like it because it is such a raw form of drama. Double-dealing, loyalty, tragedy - it is all there. In an individual match, the fact that these two (usually) people have to tell a story with nothing but their bodies. When done well it can be something. Or really stupid.

31. I read conservative books and pick apart
their dumbass arguments. I don't generally read progressive books because I already agree with a great deal of what's written in them (almost everything except for guns).

Before I started doing this, I had some difficulties arguing with Repugs because I couldn't see their talking points coming - they could argue on autopilot, I was sitting there thinking about my next words and looking unsure compared to them, etc. Now I can finish their points before they do, and cut them down just as quickly.

It's painful, but worth the effort.

I have no good excuse for watching the Tuesday evening run of 1950s detective shows on Goodlife TV: 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, and Surfside 6. They take me back to my childhood, I guess, even though I wasn't hanging around in nightclubs at the age of 8 or 9.
