How 'bout a " new movies" thread?
Good morning and happy Mom's Day, DU!

:yourock: :loveya:
(For the moms)

Now...

Two new movies that I have absolutely loved were Godsend and Luther. They were very different movies, I suppose! But they both got a lot of emotion out of me and that's what I like. To be moved -- either in terror or sympathy!

Godsend was absolutely frightening. It is really worth all the $$ for making me jump and or/exclaim loudly at least 3-4 times throughout the film.

Luther was very moving. (I'm sure many would find this to be the better film of the two, though I would ask if you can really compare the thrill of pure supernatural fright, with the perennial drama of the human struggle for justice? They are two very different animals, IMO. And both necessary in their own way...)
Even as a non-religious person, the awesome, anti-authoritarian passion of Martin Luther and the terrible injustices he fought against moved me to tears, on numerous occasions, in this film.

What new movies have you seen recently that you would recommend or would NOT recommend?

3. Do these have to be new?
I've seen a couple of decent movies lately, but they aren't exactly "new releases."

7. OK then. I just saw "Lost in Translation" a couple of weeks ago, and
I can understand how some people don't like it. I loved it, though. Not a whole lot happens in terms of plot. But I watch movies for the characters and seeing how they are developed and/or their motivation for acting as they do. I think the movie did a great job of capturing the feeling of being alone in totally unfamiliar surroundings, and how kinship can develop between those unlikely to be friends in their native environment.

Let me see if I can think of any others...

I liked it too -- all in all - it was a sweet and moving story.

What do you think he whispered to her in the end?

10. I think it could be any number of things,
Edited on Sun May-09-04 12:33 PM by Donkeyboy75
but I like not knowing. Perhaps it was something as simple as "Take care of yourself, kiddo." Nothing I can think of fits perfectly, though. How 'bout you?

And why haven't you mentioned Lethal Weapon 3? ;)

13. Hmmm,
I edited my above post to include a dig on you...

Do you think he would have said something like that? He seems so cynical and reality-based. Of course, maybe she changed him and so then he was capable of that type of dialogue.

My second option: "I wish it was you instead of the redhead." j/k

Yeah, I like that too. Dirty, but great.

Well, he was cynical but she made him very quiet and romantic, didn't you think? I think he could have said that too her, easily. Guess we will never know...

Hey, by the way Donkeyboy??? Come here... "whisper, whisper" ;-)

And LW3 is pretty old.

I love it, though. And one, and 2... Too bad Mel had to out himself as a big dickhead. I was really in love there for a while...

21. Just rented it.
Since I've spent a lot of time in Japan, I think I'll like it.
My daughter's seen it and says if you don't have that experience you might not get all of it.
We'll see.

23. It reminded me of Japan, too.
I felt really out of place there, as the only Japanese I could speak I learned from Styx songs, which was unfortunate as I never met a Mr. Roboto.

6. I saw "The Barabarian Invasions" Last night
It was very good. It's a Canadian film, so most of it is in french. It's one of the better movies I've seen in a while, although I don't get out much to see movies. Other movies I have recently seen and liked:
The Passion of The Christ (very moving)
Secret Window (awesomely scary!!)

29. I'ts about a man dying of cancer
and how he deals with it. It also involves his freinds, son, and former mistresses. Parts of it reminded me of "The Big Chill" with alot of old friends getting together again. It's a little sad, but uplifting.

24. I saw Godsend
I figured during the Friends finale would be a good time to go to the movies. It wasn't a great movie but it's nowhere NEAR as bad as it was trashed in www.rottentomatoes.com. Connie and Carla wasn't that bad either. I think a lot of movie critics must be f***ing snobs.

I love that rush, that is good enough for me. Plus the plot was decent, the acting was good... and did I say it scared the crap out of me?? I'm no snob, I love a good scare.

:-)
