LACEY -- A Brick parent has been accused of assaulting a 17-year-old Lacey soccer player during a fight between two teams playing at Gille Park.
Mary Palm, 40, of Ashwood Drive, whose daughter plays on the Brick team, was charged with simple assault and could face a grand jury investigation under a state statute that makes violent behavior at sporting and other community-sanctioned events event a fourth-degree crime, said Lacey police Sgt. Scott Tirella.
Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Robert A. Gasser said Ocean County Prosecutor Thomas F. Kelaher has vigorously campaigned against such behavior and his office would consider any request by Lacey authorities to review the matter.
"There was a concerted effort on the part of the prosecutor to get the message out that (youth sports leagues) should be fun and for kids, and adults should stay out of the process," Gasser said.
The incident happened during a match between the Lacey Wildfire and the Brick Thunder teams about 7:45 p.m. on what was supposed to be "Silent Sunday," when adults are asked to maintain a low profile and allow the players to enjoy the game.
Lacey was leading, 1-0, and the game was seconds from ending when the fight broke out.
